I have a 15-1994 and its getting pretty worn out. What is the Model of its replacement. I want one as close to this one as possible in every way. Learning and all.

Or maybe a better question might be could I get a new 1994 somewhere? or are they discontinued, none the less your help would be appreciated.

I tried the Kameleon and took it back. It was functional but cheap. The touch film would wear out far earlier that a button remote. I seen too many problems down the road with it than it was worth. Just my 2 cents.

The original replacement for the 15-1994 was the 15-2104, but it sucked and they discontinued it. The new replacement is the 15-2116, which is a great deal for $30. The only real downside to the 15-2116 is that it doesn't have the four smart keys that you probably use for macros, etc.

The next best alternative is the URC-8811 from One For All, which sells for about $25.

Hey ROB, what is the downside of the URC-8811 vs the 15-2116? Is one in your opinion better than the other?
Can you learn to any and all keys on either like the 15-1994? does the one for all have smart keys?
Does one have better memory capacity than the other?
thnx.

8811 has more keys than 15-2116. It has 8 keys (M1 to M4 and L1 to L4) that serve the purpose of 1s to 4s on the 1994.

If you use JP1, the 8811 has the best "extender" software available (2116 has none) so you can customize it more. You can learn to almost any key on the 8811 (at least as good as the 1994 in that measure).

The 1994, 8811 and 2116 all have the same memory capacity. With JP1 plus soldering skill you can change the 8811 to a larger capacity eeprom. That won't work with the 1994 or 2116.

The 8811 lacks that non slip coating that the 1994 and 2116 have. Despite that serious flaw, I think it is overall the best of the three.

(Some people think the LCD in the 2116 is an advantage vs. the 8811. I don't think so, because I want to look at the TV, not the remote, and because you only really want that info when you haven't pressed any keys in a while and then the LCD is off.)

your comment:

Does this mean that the 15-2116 it is limited on what buttons you can learn too? or not to any buttons? (since it does not have the smart keys)?

Each of the three models (1994, 8811, and 2116) has just a few keys you CAN'T learn to (despite documentation that may make you believe each only has a few key you CAN learn to).

I think the list of keys you can't learn to is nearly identical for the three models.

The 8811 has more keys you can learn to only because it has more keys.

A few Walmarts had them for a while. It was never very many Walmarts and at least some didn't restock after the initial batch sold out. I don't know if any Walmarts still have it.

Several internet vendors have them. BlueDo.com is one, I forget the names ofthe others. It shouldn't be hard to find with an online search. I expect there are links from Rob's site

Is the only real difference between the 8811 and the 8910 the LCD screen? And what about the 9910? Any one know about it and what the RF link is.

There is much more difference than that between the 8811 and 8910. The 8811 key layout is better and (assuming JP1) the 8811 has extender software available and the 8910 doesn't.

I think the 15-2103 is the next best thing to a 15-1994 now is it not! It's a 5 in one but has the learning and has the macro buttons. They took away that soft feeling shell.

It goes on sale for $12.99!

I wouldn't buy a 15-2103 because it is so hard to convert for JP1 use. I guess if you really refuse to discover how much better JP1 makes your remote then a 15-2103 is nearly as good as a 15-2104.

At the RS stores near here, the $12.99 for the 15-2103 was marked as a clearance price, not a sale price, just like the $9.97 for the 15-2104, so I expect they don't intend to restock. If you find a 15-2104, I think it is better than the 15-2103 even if you don't plan to use JP1. (I checked stores around here and bought the last six 15-2104's in the area, but each store still had 15-2103's, so here at least the 2103 is easier to find).

Why not just buck up and buy either the 15-2116 or the 15-2117? The later having RF capability similar to the 15-1995.

I have a new Toshiba TV with a built-in DVD for the kids' play room. I am totally in love with the mx-500 for my main home video set up but wanted to spend a lot less for a basic remote for the Toshiba+DirectTV box in that room.

I bought the 15-2103 and found that
a) there isn't a code for the toshiba tv/dvd
b) you can't 'learn' the power key
c) UEI sent me a code for the Toshiba, but it wasn't pre-programmed for that, so then they told me to buy a Kameleon

Will any of these others fit my need instead?
thx, paul
