I have a URC-7070 (Pro Producer 7) remote which has a 6 pin connector in the battery compartment. My question is: Is this a JP-1 ready remote, where all I would have to do is connect the cable, download the software, and start programming advanced codes? If it is, which way does the cable go since there is no identifier as to orientation.

Can anyone please help me with this?

Thanks in advance,

Alan R.

The 7070 is one of the choices on KM's list of remotes, so I'm pretty sure someone has used JP1 with it (I had never heard of it).

As for the cable orientation, you might get a better answer in the JP1 group.

Did you buy or build your JP1 cable? Do you know which corner is pin one in the cable's connector?

The remote's connector usually has some special mark on the PCB around or near the pin one corner of the connector.

If you identify pin one on each, they go together.

If not, I've never heard of anyone frying anything by using the connector backwards. Lots of people try it backwards and then try it the other way. For extra caution you might try without batteries in the remote for your first tests before you know the orientation. JP1 usually works both with and without batteries, but on some combinations of printer port an remote it might work only with batteries are only without. Try both ways (all four ways if you don't know orientation) but try without batteries first.

Thanks for the info John.

I dont' as of yet have a JP-1 cable, I wanted to first make sure that my remote would work with my URC-7070. I'm not familiar with the "KM's" list of remotes. In looking at hifi-remote.com, I didn't see mine specifically listed, but that if it had a connector, it would probably work. That's where I'm coming from. Just trying to learn. The one that I have is shown at:

The URC-7070 is a JP1 remote, but it's not very well supported. This is because it uses the out dated Motorola HC05 processing chip, which none of us have bothered to get up to speed on.

So while it might be worth playing around with the URC-7070 and JP1, generally speaking you'd be better of getting a new remote, like the URC-8811 ($25) or the 15-2116 ($30).

Ahhhhh, thank you Rob,

That's the kind of info I was really looking for. Now I know that the best thing to do is to get another OFA or RS remote to program my MX-500 with advanced codes. Since I would only be using it for learning advanced codes and sending them to the MX-500, and not saving the data in the OFA OR RS remote once transferred, what remote would you recommend that still is JP-1 compatible, lowest cost (& probably has the fewest devices to control, which is just fine)? I wouldn't think that I would need a learning remote since I can learn most all of my existing remote codes to the '500, except for my Sony STR-DE945 which I know I will need advanced codes for. Things like soundfields, and whathave you, and maybe some X-10 commands to my IR543.

I know that there are some 3 or 4 device "cheapy" remotes out there, but don't know if they are JP-1's. Want to kind of take the "low" road cost wise as after I'm done, it will most like gather dust sitting on a shelf or in a drawer, but still accomplish the task at hand.

I'm all ears.

Thanks again Rob.

Gee, that was better the second time around. Why do you need jp1 if you are only going to send discrete commands to your MX500? Just about all of the discrete codes you will ever need are listed in the OFA listing of advanced codes, and the few that may not be there probably wouldn't justify spending more to get set up for jp1 than your discrete code remote cost.

The current line of cheap OFA remotes are not worth the cost of the plastic that they are made with. Not only are they not JP1 compatible, but they don't have EEPROM chips (so they lose their memory when the batteries are out) and they don't support key mover. Cheap crap, but hey, you get what you pay for.

The cheapest OFA that's worth anything is the URC-6012w, which is $15 at Walmart, but you need to do some soldering to really made it a great remote.

The cheapest OFA that has learning and is JP1 compatible is the URC-8811 (aka URC-8810w) which goes for around $25.

You might also want to consider the Radio Shack 15-2104. This remote has both learning and JP1, and is being cleared out for under $20, so get them while you can - it's been discontinued.

The best RS remote with both learning and JP1 is the 15-2116, which goes for $29.

Thanks Rob,

I think that you are probably right, in that the listed discrete & advanced codes will most likely fill most all of my needs for my MX-500.

I want to find the discrete / advanced codes for my Sony STR-DE945 A/V receiver to switch Soundfields and Inputs; and for my Toshiba TW56X81 HDTV to directly switch to Video1,2,3 & ColorStream1 & 2, inputs which I can't currently do on the MX-500. I have to toggle thru them one by one (TV inputs). I have no access to Soundfields at all remotely, except on the original LCD remote which you can't learn into the MX-500.

Those remotes you recommended will also give me JP1 capability if I need it.

So again I say, THANKS.
