I have a 6-in-1 upgradeable URC-4300, and would love some help in upgrading it. Any takers? Here are the details...

It's several years old and I'm trying to get it to work a couple of new devices (it's still works fine for my old ones). Thanks to the great list of codes on the web I think I've found the device codes I need, but my remote won't accept them (ie. it doesn't double blink after I enter them). So I'm sure I need to upgrade my remote to contain these codes. This is where my problem starts.

I've tried downloading the sound files from the 1-for-all web site (my manual says the URC-4300 is phone upgradeable). But I can't get my remote to communicate. I press Magic for 2 seconds and then power and the LED comes on - so it's ready to receive, but the sound file has no effect on it. The LED doesn't blink (while the sounds are playing or after) and stays on for 30 seconds after the sound file has finished. I've tried different volumes, different speakers, different computers, different positions of the remote and downloading the file again (several times) - but always the same result.
I've also tried downloading different codes, including ones I already use. And reinitialising the remote (with both 9-8-0 and 9-8-1). But the remote never accepts the sound files.

I've also tried the phone support. I'm in Australia and TEAC Sales now provides the support. They've told me that my model is no longer compatible with their hardware and I need to buy a new remote (this sounds a bit fishy to me).
And the 1-for-all help email is, well ..., unresponsive.

The URC-4300 has 3 holes in the battery compartment, so I don't have the luxury of being able to upgrade it with JP1.

That's my life story - Has anyone had similar upgrade problems? Any offers of advice?

Each sound file contains the "signature" of the remote that it was made for. A different model remote won't accept the sound file because the signature won't match.

What model remote were the sound files that you downloaded for?

There are tools in the JP1 group to produce sound files for any model remote for which the group has basic information, I don't recognise "URC-4300" so I don't know if someone there has that basic information.

The sound files were for a URC-4300.
I don't know that it was ever released in the States (only Europe and Australia?). It's a paddle shape 6-in-1 (similar looking to the URC-4005, I think).

I believe it is an inductive pickup design rather than a microphone, meaning it doesn't hear the sound, instead it senses the magnetic field created by a cheap speaker playing the sound.

Do you have the ability to play the sound through the PC's crappy built in speaker rather than through decent speakers? If so, it would help a lot to open the PC up and either get close to the back side of the speaker or detach the speaker from the case, so you don't have the case metal blocking the magnetic field.

This is all a long shot, since you already tried different speakers and think the file is for the right model remote, etc.

It is an inductive pick up.
The main speakers I've been using to load are the in-built speakers in a laptop. They sit under a metal grill which could impact the magnetic field. So I've tried both external speakers, and I've hooked up a separate .3W 8ohms speaker and placed it right on the inductive coil. This actually give one quick blink during the sound file, but the LED stays on after :-(

I think the signature is correct or the remote aborts, unless it has missed the first part of the sound. (This is true at least for 15-2133.)
You might want to try some differnt sound player programs (mplayer2.exe, etc.) I heard someone telling that WinAmp didn't work well.

BTW, when I tried the JP1 sound file converter, I was using my laptop's speaker and it worked fine. Try the other side, too, if it's stereo.

I've been back in touch with Teac phone support and they have upgraded my remote over the phone - I still have no idea why the sound files from the internet won't load....

But, they told me I still can't control DVDs (I have a Pioneer DV-355). So I asked them to load the Laser Disk codes for Pioneer - which they did successfully.
My remote now accepts VCR device codes 571, 525, 548, 632 & 638). But none of them will control my DVD player :-(

Maybe I'm stuck with a remote that is obsolete. And to quote the manual "as you buy new products in the future, the ONE FOR ALL 6 will never become obsolete".
