I have set up my new 2116 to control the usual array of devices: TV, VCR, DVD, Receiver, CD. I completed the code setup for each one without any issues.

However, the control of my Samsung TXM3298HF television is very flaky. I have to point the 2116 directly at the IR receiver on the TV to get it to respond and even then it often takes 2 or 3 pushes of the button to get a response.

This seems to happen for all controls of this television: volume up/down, channel up/down, power, PIP, etc.

The batteries are fresh.

The original remote works just fine. Very reliable; no need to point carefully.

The 2116 works very reliably for all of the other devices.

I've reset the code several times with no change in behavior.

Any thoughts?

What setup code are you using?

I bet the wrong version of the NEC protocol is being used, this is very common with Samsung devices. Most One For All remotes have the wrong version in them. If there are other codes listed for Samsung TVs, try them. If they don't help, JP1 might be necessary to fix the problem.

What's the setup code for that "wrong" version of NEC?

Many Samsung TV's use an NEC-like signal with device=7 and subdevice=7 and nonstandard (for NEC) timing. Most UEI remotes have that as TV/0060.

If there were an NEC:7.7 setup code with standard timing, it would give the above symptoms on a Samsung TV. JP1 users have created that setup code as an upgrade by mistake with those results (since the old decoder doesn't flag the nonstandard timing).

Are you saying there is a standard NEC:7.7 setup code built in? (I can't find it). Or are you saying there is a Samsung TV that uses standard timing NEC instead of the non standard timing Samsung usually uses?

What he's saying is that most of the UEI setup codes for Samsung use an NEC1 type signal (I forget whether it's the new "short" version, or not), but most Samsung devices use an NEC2 type signal. A good example is VCR/0240. Most people find that this code works for everything except the RECORD button, which needs to be held down. As the NEC1 signal doesn't repeat properly, the VCR cannot see that the button is being held down. I created an upgrade using the regular NEC2 signal for my samsung VCR which works fine, but I haven't checked whether an NEC2-short signal would be a better match to the original signal yet (though the device and sub device do match, so I suspect that it might).

I'm using a setup code of 0060. johsnfine had it nailed.

I tried the other setup codes for Samsung TVs: 0030, 0178, 0019, 0056, and 0032. None of them work at all.

It appears that I need to use JP-1 to address the non-standard timing of the Samsung TV. Advice on that subject?

You might want to start by verifying that the issue really is a difference between the built-in TV/0060 and your TV (and not something wrong with your 2116 or something else strange that we haven't guessed yet).

Learn a signal from the original remote into the 2116 and see if the learned signal works well. Be sure to use a long press of the button on the orriginal remote when learning. If that works well than it is some issue like the one Rob suggested or the one I suggested, either of which can be fixed easily with JP1.

If the learned signal doesn't work well either, then something else is happening. Maybe JP1 would help that too, but maybe not.

You can find the introductory info about JP1 on Rob's site
[Link: hifi-remote.com]
then there are links to the Yahoo group where all the files (and help etc.) are.

Once you're using JP1 you'll need a few learned signals from the orriginal remote to see whether you have what Rob suggested (which my new decoder will display as "NECx2") or a standard "NEC1" or some other form (TV/0060 is what my new decoder calls "NECx1"). Once you know which it is, it is easy to create and load into the 2116 a new setup code that will be an exact match.

(Having read Rob's message, I now think his guess is better than mine, but you need JP1 either way and with JP1 you can find out for sure which it is).

I had a similar problem with a 15-2133. Here's what I did to fix it.

First, I started with the KM file Samsung_3097.txt I found in the JP1 | Files | Device Codes | TV folder. This file creates a device upgrade 1618 which uses NEC2 protocol, main device 7 and sub device 7.

I loaded the upgrade into IR and then to my remote. This got me closer, but still didn't work exactly right, i.e., buttons had to be pushed multiple times, the vol+ and vol- buttons didn't scroll, etc. The final fix suggested by someone in the JP1 group (sorry, I don't remember who to give credit to) was to set the PARM value to 31.

Hopefully this will also resolve, or at least help with, your problem.

My problem is now resolved. Thanks to all who posted for their help. I successfully used the samsung_3097.txt file to create the 1618 setup code. I need to tweak some the settings for some mismatched buttons but the basics are now working great. My wife no longer wants to throw the new remote out the window! My first JP1 success. Yahoo!

Thanks again!
