You're right Rob... My RS had one 2104 left for $18 so I snapped it up.

I saved my current config. on my old 2104 and then uploaded it to the new one. I did this repeated over the next half hour trying to figure out what I'm doing wrong, because no matter what settings I establish on the "Other Setttings" screen for volume punch through, the new 2104 wants to control my TV (it should be controling my amp when in ANY mode except cable / sat or TV).

Am I missing something that CAN"t be done via JP1 and I must have done to my first 2104? Or could this be why this is the last one left?

(by the way... they also had a touch screen 2107 for $65... I couldn't resist it... we'll see if I actually keep it).

I don't have a 2104 anymore. I thought someone else would have replied by now with some info. You might be running into one of the stupid 2104 limitations. Ir.exe let's you TRY lots of things that won't always WORK, depending on what remote you are using. I know the 2116/2117 has the newer, smarter VPT that defines the VPT device but lets you "opt-out" of VPT for some device modes. I think the 2104 had the dumber version of VPT with no "opt-out". You can use special protocols to get around this, though.

Well the wierd thing is that I'm just duplicating what I've been doing with my other 2104 (whose backlight stopped working).

I even tried writing all zeros to the new 2104 and then re-uploading my existing setup again. Still to no avail. The new 2104 wants only to control my TV for punchthrough and nothing else.

Last night I manually diabled volume punch through on everything (which it should have already been because of my previous setup) and all this did was make the remote want to only control my cable box for VPT. So I remapped my cable volume keys to my amp and this worked for a while. Then this morning it didn't anymore (at least I'm 95% sure of that --- it was a little late when I thought I had it working!).

How about this... is there any reason whatsoever (especially since I overwrote the whole memory with 00000s first) that I shouldn't get the SAME EXACT results when writing over the new remote with my old setup (both are of course 15-2104s)???????

(My 2117 was shipped two days ago and I can't wait, frankly).

that sounds pretty fishy. Did you already try a p-981 reset on the new 2104? You might want to take it back for a refund.

I don't know a damn about JP1, but do you need to enter the setup codes first, even though you're coping from one remote to the other?

I've posted at yahoo jp1 on this now too.

I got yet ANOTHER 2104 at RS today and have similar problems. And I did a P-981 reset before I did the upload just to clear things out.

This is killing me.

Any reason I can't just upload and expect everything to be exactly the same?

When you download the memory contents of remote #1 and load it up into remote #2, remote #2 should be identical to remote #1 after that. There's no need to enter setup codes or anything as this will be taken care of.

Just FYI, when you enter a setup code, it writes that info to the EEPROM, which is what you download from with JP1.

Hey Edmund, isn't it about time you did get into JP1?

It's hard to figure out how exactly these symptoms could occur, but I can think of a way to get pretty close to these symptoms.

If the reset signal in the JP1 cable weren't working then uploading to the 2104 sets all of the eeprom but some settings stay in registers.

To test this theory, upload then remove the remote's batteries, press a key while the batteries are out, put the batteries back and test. If it's fixed it was the reset signal. If that makes no difference it was something else.

Rob, that would be the first thing I would do, after I retired my webtv and got a computer.:)

I've posted some files at Yahoo JP1 at Rob's request.. Unfortunately, I cannot access Yahoo groups from work, so I'll figured I'd follow up here too.

At least with my jp1 cable (from Richard Hovis) I have to remove my batteries for it to work, so I'm not sure how in that case I would execute the test you suggest, but I'm willing to try anything.

I do love my 2104... I guess I'll just love my 2117 too when it gets here, but frankly I expected to leave that one (2117) in the living room without a direct line of sight to my equipment and still use the 2104 as my primary.

So, leaving batteries out while up loading, how would I test it out exactly? I did try to just put the batteries in, try it, take 'em out, press a key, replace the batteries and try again, but to no avail.

Wow, a man without a computer! I didn't know such fellows still existed. Next you'll be telling me that you don't have a PVR yet either!

It'd be really funny if this is the case. A man posted over 200 messages in the TiVo forum without having one...

Well I finally got the new 2104 working (more or less). The key was to do a 981 reset, then, with factory default setings, do my home theatre function group mappings, then to upload the old 2

The only thing is that the "INFO" key, which, like the MENU key etc, should be mapped to my Replay TV, doesn't seem to work in Home Theatre mode.. only in VCR mode. That's odd, but it may just be the price I pay for a backlight!
