I am a bit of a AV techno-newbie, but am upgrading my whole home entertainment system. It was all SONY and will now be a mix of manufacurers.

I was looking to get a learning remote to input codes to my SONY AV-3000, which is a bit bulky and hard to work with. Then I started through this forum and found that the Cinema 7 and 15-1994 would have been great, but are no longer available.

The 15-2116 looks to be a good choice as a follow on to the 2 mentioned above, and I have decided to get it, not to work WITH my AV-3000, but to REPLACE it.

Having said all of that, I am also intrigued by the discussions on JP-1 and have tried to do some searching through this forum and other links, but I am a bit confused and am hopeful that you can provide some input.

It appears that the 2116 has a JP-1 connection that requires only that I get a cable & plug it in, rather than go through a soldering/redesign loop. Is that correct?

More importantly, I have seen the info that talks to using a PC and downloading information rather than manually programming the unit. A couple of questions:
1) How/where do you attach the JP-1 cable to the computer? Is it a USB connection?

2) Is the JP-1 link/software compatible with Apple Macintosh - I have a new Apple G4 IMAC. (If pushed, I might be able to use my PC at work, but I'd prefer the MAC)

I apologize for the length of the post and the obvious shortfall in my knowledge, but your help will be most appreciated.

I'll check back later, but I am off to Radio Shack to but a 2116. Even if I can't take advantage of the JP-1 capability, the 2116 looks like a life saver.

Thanks in advance,

Ray

Correct... all you need is the cable (but read on).

More importantly, I have seen the info that talks
to using a PC and downloading information rather
than manually programming the unit. A couple
of questions:
1) How/where do you attach the JP-1 cable to the

The current JP1 cable designs all use the PC parallel port.

2) Is the JP-1 link/software compatible with Apple
Macintosh - I have a new Apple G4 IMAC. (If pushed,
I might be able to use my PC at work, but I'd
prefer the MAC)

All of the JP1 software tools currently work only on a PC running Windows (IR.exe) and Excel 97 or later (KM).

For JP1-specific questions, you'd do better asking them over at the JP1 group:

The 2116 is great -- not as great as the 15-1994, but still great.

Yes, the 2116 has a jp1 plug that you can use without soldering -- when you open up the battery comapartment you will see a six prong connector, which people have dubbed a JP1 connector -- that is the way to tie to a pc. You build or buy a jp1 interface -- the parts cost about $5 if you want to build it yourself or you can buy a pre-built one from BlueDo or a number of other sources. One side of the interface is a female connector that plugs into the six prongs on your remote, and the other side is a connector that plugs into the parallel port of your pc.

Once you've done that, you can use your pc to load in new codes for equipment whose codes are not already in the remote, create device upgrades which in effect rempap keys to whatever configuration you want without sacrificing memory, program the remote with macros and keymoves and do a lot of other fancy things that you can't do without it.

Note that unless you use a computer to program the remote via the jp1 connector, you will find that you will probably run out of memory in the 2116. The remote is incredibly powerful with plenty of memory to cover all the buttons and all the remotes you could conceivably be using so long as you use the jp1 connector, but programming it without a computer via learning codes is highly inefficient and you will run out of memory doing things that way.

I don't think people have ported the software to a mac, but you should go here to find out everything you could ever want to know about this subject:

Or, for a more summary introduction, you can go to www.hifi-remote.com

Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys.

I believe I will get a JP-1 cable from Bluedo and take a crack at this puppy on a PC.

I recently got a powerbook for my son, so I've spent a bit of time playing with a MAC. And here's what I think would be great unsolicited advice for you: Time for you to get a pc ;)
