1) I see a variety of pre-built JP1 cables that can be purchased. Does the same cable construction work for both the 7800 and 8811?
2) Assuming that it is the same cable, is there any soldering required for either remote?

1) Same cable
2) The 7800 does not have the JP1 connector built in (the 8811 does). In addition to the 7800 and the JP1 cable, you need a "JP1 header". Some vendors of JP1 cables will include that header.
You CAN use the header as an adapter on the end of the cable and plug it into the holes in the 7800's PCB. It's harder to use that way. Most people consider it worth the initial trouble to take the 7800 apart and solder the header in.
