FWIW, I called customer support at 1-800-THE-SHACK to find out when the 15-2117 would be available (as others have posted, you can see a webpage for hte 2117 by going tothe radioshack page for hte 2116 and editing hte address for the 2117; in other words, go to [Link: radioshack.com] ). The 15-2117 is the 15-2116 with rf capability, and will cost $50 compared to $30 for the 15-2116.

The person I talked to asked her supervisor and then came back and said that they expected to have the 15-2117 available online and in stores in "2 to 4 weeks". I have no idea whether that will be true -- I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

I asked the same question about 3 weeks ago and got the the same answer, 2-4 weeks. I'm downright pessimistic about the 2117 these days, as it was first going to be released in November, then December....and I see no end to this trend at all.

For people who haven't been been following the saga of the 2117, I just want to make sure that they don't get their hopes up too high.

My spies are at UEI and OFA, I got a very rude response the one time I tried contacting Radio Shack so I haven't bothered since. So, no, I don't have any additional info regarding the 15-2117, the last time anyone at UEI mentioned it they said it should be out in December (2002) :)

I work at a radioshack franchise and was able to place a backorder for the 2117 last week. My sales rep had no ETA, no gaurntee that it willbe shipping in the 2-4 weeks as discussed. The franchise stores are the bastard children of Radioshack Corprate so if we can put them on backorder I'd assume they would be showing up in corporate stores some time soon. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the input, Scott and Rob.

Amazing that RS doesn't realize how valuable it would be to play nice with Rob...

Why I love the 15-1995
It has the command cneter so properly set up I don't need to point the remote in any direction to control any device in any room.

The LCD display lets me see which one of about 20 banks (thanks to JP1) is currently active

The HomeTheater button in conjunction with JP1 Extenders allows me to conviently swap out multiple device controls within the same bank.

This remote rocks!! and the ony thing it's missing is Learning.

Supposedly the 15-2117 IS the 15-1995 with learning. The button layout is exactly the same but I'm not sure the 15-2117 has a HomeTheater funtion.

I also love my 1995. Believe it or not, I also converted my wife and she loves the 1995.

Well, here's the thing. The old sam8 processor couldn't do LCD or RF. The 1993 and 1994 ran on the old sam8 processor. To make an RF remote with LCD, UEIC and RS had to use a mits740 processor, which did not do learning. The new sam8 processor can do RF, LCD and learning. For some wacky reason, RS made the 2103 and 2104 with the new sam8 processor, both with learning, but neither with RF or LCD. Then, someone at RS got a clue and made the 2116/2117 using the new sam8 processor but with the old 1994/1995 style. These remotes are almost identical to each other, and the physical button layout is the same as the 1995, but the functional button layout is quite different. They have a "my system" button replacing the "home theater" button of the 1995.

So, I don't think the 2117 is the 1995 with learning. It's more like the 2116 with RF. Until a 2116/2117 extender is written, the 1995 is slightly superior from a JP1 perspective, but the 2116/2117 has been shown to be better "out of the box" than most of the other RS remotes. In other words, you don't need an extender as badly because they don't have a lot of stupid restrictions in the ability to assign advanced codes or macros.

Where I'm a little confused is why the 1994 extenders don't work on the 2117 if it's using the Sam8 processor. This is probably a question for JP1 but I think actually the 2116 & 2117 use the S3C8 processor for which we have no extenders right now.

With the new RDF 1995 file that Rob made for me I have tons more Key Move memory on the 1995 which greatly enhances your ability to customize key layouts. I bought half a dozen 1995's when Ratshack was practically giving them away and right now I'm sticking with it.

Extenders are quite specific to individual models of the remote.

You can't use an identical extender across models unless the internals of those models are really the same, the way a 6800 is a 7800 (with a button missing), or a 6012 is an 8811 (in a different package with buttons and components missing), or a 2116 is a 2117 (with a component missing).

The 1994 is a different S3C80 cpu than the 2116, making its extender quite different.

The 8811 is the same S3C80 cpu as the 2116, but the 2116 has LCD which seriously affects the design of an extender.

The RCU810 is the same S3C80 cpu as the 2116 AND has LCD, making its extender as close to a possible 2116 extender as any that exist, but even so porting it would be serious work. The 2104 is even less different internally from an 8811 than a 2116 is from an RCU810, but porting the 8811 extender to 2104 took a fair amount of guessing and testing and changing to get all the bugs worked out.

Can't we just kidnap Nicola and get him back to work on these issues?

Damn. Six? I got a little lucky on ebay...$12 for a used one. I almost gave up on it, but then Jason wrote the extender. When you have backups of your favorite remote, there's no reason to move to another except to tinker for tinkering's sake.

Well what I failed to mention is that I also have half a dozen 1994's, a 1935, 1925, RCU something or other and a bunch more. All bought for about $4 a piece once discontinued.

The joke is I bought my first universal remote to get rid of my remote clutter. Then I found JP1 and became a remote junkie.

I still like the 1995 better than all the rest--and you're right. Until the 1995 extenders and other goodies got done I was a dyed-in-the wool 1994 kinda guy.

Have people confirmed that the 2117 is really available in the stores )you can't always trust those websites)?
