OK, I bought a 9910 and didn't like it, so I bought a 2116 and then I cannibalized the 9910 to try to upgrade the 2116 to a 2117. I botched the de-soldering job so much that the puck was worthless, so I'd like to try again. But I'd prefer not buying another new 9910 to experiment on.
So, I'm looking for an rf remote that I can pick up cheap from ebay. They don't have the 15-1995 or 8090 now -- which other old remotes have have the puck?
Alan

Thanks, guys. I've read that the 8800 also has RF but comes without the receiver -- is that true?
Also, I note that when I first tried the transplant, I found the puck in the 2116 (plugged into the pcb with 4 connector pins as advertised) but I also found a separate coil glued nearby. I messed the coil up pretty badly when I tried to remove it along with the puck -- is the coil part of the rf apparatus or am I supposed to leave alone?? (I had assumed the coil was some kind of antenna for the rf, but people talked only about a single 'puck' when they talked about upgrading the 2116 so I wasn't sure.) If I'm supposed to remove the coil, I can't imagine how I could do that without breaking the connection.

No, the 8800 does not have the RF puck, when you take the puck out of the 9800 it becomes a 8800. When I removed a puck from a 9800, there was nothing but he four pins. I just received my 9910 yesterday, so I can't say if they changed the configuration of the puck. I gave my modified 2116 to my BIL.

Thanks. Are you planning to open up teh 9910? If so, please let me know if the puck arrangement looks very different -- is the separate coil that's tucked underneath the puck something that did not exist in the older versions?

I opened up the 9910, the puck is the same, except its not soldered in, they hot-glued it, alot of glue. The coil is something new in these remotes, but just goes under the puck, it doesn't seem to have anything to do with it. The coil is covered with some of the glue from the puck.

I agree there's a lot of glue -- there's enough so that it's hard to remove the puck without hurting things.
You think the coil is completely separate? When I got done taking the puck and the coil out (I wasn't trying to take the coil out, but you know how that is...), the remote still seemed to work fine. So I figured the coil was in fact somehow tied to the puck. Possible?

I believe the coil is part the modem to upgrade the remote.

The 8910 and RF sister 9910 are both modem upgradeable. If you butchered the coil like you did the puck you won't be able to get ueic upgrades via the web (.wav files) or over the phone. Jim

OK, so I killed the modem. I don't care about that at all -- it's hard for me to imagine doing anything by modem that I couldn't already do by jp1! (By the way, how does one interact with the modem anyway -- do you somehow hook a phone up to the remote via the jp1 connector??)
Anyway, I don't care about the modem, but what irks me is how badly I butchered the puck, since I was really looking forward to using my '2117'.
For those inquiring minds that wonder how I screwed it up so badly, well, I kept heating the four pin connectors at the pcb, and as I tugged to pull the puck off, the puck in fact pulled away from the four pins (leaving the four pins sticking out of the pcb and leaving a naked puck without any connectors). If I was any good at this, I could probably fix it, but hey, if I waas any good at this, that would never have happened in the first place.)
If I can find a cheap 8090 or something like that, I'll try again. Otherwise, I'll wait until the official 2117s are out.

You put the remote up to the phone, to load codes from ueic. I'm going to take advantage of it, there is only one tape code in the 9910, and its a sony code, I have pioneer. Maybe by now they have a code for my Classic DVD player.:)

Am I correct in assuming this is irrelevant for people that program with jp1?

Correct, they have no need of a modem.

The only reason someone with JP1 might want the modem, is if their device needs a new protocol that isn't currently in circulation, then you could use the modem feature to have UEI give you the code.
