I'm using a Radio Shack 15-2116 remote and am trying to set up the macros. The remote has no buttons labeled for the macros. The manual says to select any button on the remote for the macro button. The remote wont let me use any of the device buttons for this. So the only buttons that I have been able to use so far for macros are the numbered buttons. When i do this, this then makes that button useless for anything else. Can't use the button now for entering channel numbers. Does this make sense? Am I missing somthing here or is this just a poorly designed remote.

1) You could select some of the less critical function keys (such as GUIDE, FREEZE, or +100) and put the macros there.

2) You could get a JP1 cable and put macros on the device keys and/or MY_SYSTEM key.

3) You could put macros on "shifted" keys. If you don't know about shifted keys, they're described here:

I think it's a poorly designed remote, because it has too few keys. I prefer the 8811 (also because I don't like LCDs in a remote).

I disagree that it's poorly designed. In fact, I consider it a better remote than the 8811 (which I also have but don't use anymore). You can install macros on the power button and all of the device buttons (whether it be shifted without jp1 or unshifted with jp1). Where else would you need a macro? IMHO the omission of dedicated macro buttons was a plus rather than a negative, for me anyway. My system is fairly complex and this is the first remote I've setup that I still like after a couple months of use.

Buy or make the cable and setup the remote with jp1. Use the device buttons in unshifted mode. You'll be glad you did.

I should have emphasized the "I" in my "I think". It is certainly a matter of personal preference.

Really? I understood that without JP1 you couldn't even put macros on shifted device keys.

I agree.
