While I really like the RS-2116, it has a major design flaw if you plan to use it with a cable converter and digital cable.

Most people use the "Guide, Info, Menu, and Exit" buttons to maneuver around the guide settings on either SAT or CBL, and all these buttons can be individually learned EXCEPT the "Exit" button.

The RS-2116 manual says the only buttons that can't be programmed with IR LEARN are P, Light, and Power buttons. However, if you try to program the "Exit" button for anything during the IR LEARN process, it jumps directly to an apparently hardwired function of "Exit from Setup."

This means the "Exit" button near all the other Guide related buttons can not be programmed to exit the SAT or CBL guide. Yeah, I could program some other button to Exit, like the PIP button, but the fact remains it's a dumb design flaw.

I also tried assigning the Cable Converter's advanced EXIT code of 080 to the Exit button, but the same thing happens...when it's pressed during the process it simply exits setup.

I agree that is a flaw, and if I discover a work around I will let you know. In the meantime, you can program the EXIT button using JP1

Thanks, Rob. In the meantime I'll keep looking for a workaround as well. Other than this, it seems like a nice remote for something like secondary bedroom components while still functioning as a source of advance codes for my MX-500.

So far I've been able to get by without using JP1, but will probably have to do it sooner or later. I recall trying it early on with the MX-500 but it wouldn't work with Windows XP. Will IR.EXE now work with Windows XP?

I've been using JP1 (IR.exe/KM) since Windows XP came out. What doesn't work when you try it?

Rob...I think I've found the easiest workaround, short of programming it with JP1. I kept running out of memory by trying to keep the RS-2116 on TV and learning the commands I wanted from my CBL in that mode.

I reversed the process (keeping it on CBL) and programming the few TV commands I needed (Vol +/-, Sleep, Mute) in the CBL mode and I had sufficient memory.

Most importantly, when kept in the CBL mode the EXIT button now works as it should (Exiting the CBL Guide).

All in all...the RS-2116 is a nice remote for a secondary system and primarily for programming my MX-500. I'll still order the JP1 since I can't find the one I bought nearly a year ago.
