I bought the 2104 thinking it was a true Learning remote, only to find only 4 buttons will learn from putting two remotes head-to-head. Or am I wrong? I did find out here that I can actually reprogram most of the buttons if I track down the advanced codes, which made me feel a little better. However, I bought this remote to work, in addition to 4 A/V devices in the bedroom, a Honeywell pedestal fan and a Frigidaire air conditioner. I was able to teach my MX-500 to learn the fan and AC codes and have them actually work, so I know its possible. Is there some way to get these codes for the fan and AC programmed to the buttons that I select (not those 4 special buttons) on the 2104? TIA

There is no way the 2104 can be considered a "true learning remote". It is a Preprogrammed remote, with a learning feature. You only have about enough memory for 20-30 learned commands, for the whole remote. You aren't limited to just the 1s-4s buttons to learn to. But there are some you can't learn to, including POWER, DEVICE KEYS, MUSIC, MOVIE, SPORT, NEWS, THEATER.

"You aren't limited to just the 1s-4s buttons to learn to."

Does that mean I can learn to other keys by putting the remotes head-to-head? That is the option I really need. I have the original remotes to learn from.

I know I can program to most of the keys, which is fine if I can find the codes. But where in the world do I find codes for a remote controlled fan and an air conditioner?

The part in the manual about only being able to learn to the four smart keys is an absolute LIE, so yes, you can learn to most of the other buttons, with a few exceptions - like Edmund mentioned, so give it a try.

If you don't have enough learning memory for the two strange devices that you want to control, and you really want to control them using the 15-2104 in addition to your MX500, I suggest you check out JP1. using JP1 you can create new codes for the 15-2104 which you can upload from your computer.

Well, I'm ready to return mine... I can't get ANY learning to work! Or Home Theater setup.

I hold P until I get two flashes, but when I type in 975, I get one long flash, instead of two again like the manual says I should get, and it doesn't work.

Same thing happens for codes 976 (delete learned keys) and 979 (home theater setup).

Anyone have any idea why it's doing this? I've setup 5 devices including one that needed manual scan, and power macros, so I know what I'm doing here... it's just rejecting the command codes.

Sometime these remotes get strange things in their memory and various things don't work until you do a 981 reset. It's fairly rare. I don't know how to confirm that it happened. I'm not sure it could explain the 979 command failing.

If you don't have too much already programmed in, try the 981 reset and see if 975 and 797 work after that. (After the 981 reset, you must re select your setup codes and re enter and macros or key moves you need).

If he's ready to return it, he has nothing to lose by trying the 981 reset.

Thanks very much for the suggestion, but it didn't work... I reset it with 981 (btw, why can't I find this reset procedure in the manual?) but 975, 976, and 979 still get the long error flash instead of two quick ones.

I read in another post that sometimes the batteries can affect this thing's operation. I have tried both Alkalines and NiMH rechargables.

I guess I will take it back to Radio Shack or try their remote tech support phone line. It's a real pity.. other than this problem (which of course ruins everything) I love this remote! It has comprehensive codes for 4 of my 5 devices, and I managed to find the fifth (an obscure little Aiwa mini deck) with manual scan.

Oh well... I really just got this to play around with until my MX-500 arrives :)

Are you sure you have the 2104 and not the 2114?

Positive it's a 15-2104. The manual cover lists it as a 15-2104, "6-In-One Light and Learn Remote". The remote also says 15-2104 in the fine print on the back at the bottom. It also looks identical to the picture here: [Link: remotecentral.com].

I just returned it and picked up an All-In-One Cinema 6+. Unfortunately this seems to have no codes (programmed or manual scan) for either my receiver or CD player, so I'll be returning it too.

You should have just exchanged the 15-2104 for a new one. It's definitely a learning remote, which means you probably just had a dud. My only guess as to why it stopped learning is that the EEPROM got disconnected somehow or it just faulty.

Well, I *wanted* to just get a new 15-2104, but they didn't have another one, so I decided to try the only one they did have.. the One for All Cinema 6+.

Anyway I returned that one yesterday, and found out what store location I could go to get a 15-2104. So I went there, but opted instead to try this one: [Link: radioshack.ca]

Because I like the button layout, and it has an LCD screen. But.... unfortunately it seems to have the exact same code library as the Cinema 6+. So I returned it and got another 15-2104, which I am happy to say works perfectly! I think I will write a review for it here shortly.
