Just wanna make sure I got this right.

Almost any key on the remote can learn, not just L1-4.

Almost any key can be assigned a macro (does this include the device keys like dvd and vcr; so I could setup a macro that when dvd is pressed it turns on the dvd and switches the receiver and tv to the right inputs)?

Any key on the remote can learn, but you'll be limited to 28 or so keys in total.

Any key can be assigned a macro, except for the device keys and, I believe, the shift key.

The "28" number is an average. You can fit a lot more if you just tap the source remote rather than hold it down for two seconds like it says in the manual.

BTW, why are you getting a Cinema 6?

The device keys cannot be taught a macro or learn. Be sure you get the learning version (6800 or 7800) of the remote. You may only need to control 6 devices, but I'd suggest getting a Cinema7 if you can find one. There's always something new coming out.

Because of where I live I don't have many options and Costco has the 6800 for $20 Canadian (I could get the 7 at Radio shack, but I could buy 2 6s at costco for what Radio Shack wants for the 7). I only have a dvd, reciever, vcr and tv to control, so that still leaves 2 blank device keys.

Not to mention the way my system is setup the only thing I have to do with the tv is turn it on.
Unless there is some major difference in the memory compacity (which I think is identical) there is no point in buying the 7 for me and likely for most other people.
