what is the difference between all-for-one Cinema 7 (7800) and Cinema 7+ (7801)?
also, my equipment which didnt work on the all-for-one 4640 model were:
cable - clearmax 6000 receiver- technics SA-GX490 dvd player- apex 1500D
will these 3 pieces work on cinema? if so, which version should i get the 7 or 7+?

The only difference between a 7800 and a 7801 is color.
The "Cinema 7" is normally a 7200 or 7201. I haven't looked at the packaging recently enough to be sure, but I thought the 7800 was labeled "+".
There is a big difference between the 720X models and the 780X models. The 720X models are missing learning and missing 4 buttons and have a different code library and are much harder to add JP1 support to.
I don't happen to know the setup codes for any of those devices, so I couldn't say whether those codes are in the 7800 or 7200. (If you get a 7800 and a JP1 cable, you don't need to worry about whether the codes are included, because you can learn and decode signals to find out what you need, then build your own setup code).

yes. i compared the 7800 is black and 7801 is silver. the # of buttons and layout are identical.
i will go for the 7800 then. the JP1 cable does not come with it however.
Where can i purchase this JP1 cable? Does this JP1 hook up to the PC to download codes?
thanks for the help!

check rob's site and the JP-1 group for sources to purchase the cable, both as completed and kit form. It hooks up to your pc to create setup codes, or modify ones to add more functions, and rearrange their layouts. It will enable you to do a lot more with your remote than you can by manually programming it. You'll also need the free software available at the Jp-1 yahoo group as well. Jim

The 6 pin header is not preinstalled in the 7800. If you didn't want to build your own JP1 cable, you may not want to take the 7800 apart to install the header.
I use the header as an adapter to connect the cable to the 7800. That doesn't require taking the 7800 apart or doing any soldering. It was a little tricky at first to figure out exactly how to hold the cable to press the pins of the header against the inside of the holes of the 7800 PCB. Most people decide it's easier to do the soldering.
Whether you solder the header or not, you do need a header. Some sellers of JP1 cables include that header with the cable, but don't assume, ask. There are various old PC parts from which you can salvage a larger header that can be cut down to the desired 6 pins; But that only works if you have kept around the right otherwise worthless old PC parts.

The 7800 does not already have pins (another way of describing the "header").
I personally really prefer the 7800's button layout to the other models; But I don't like the idea of mailing it away for someone else to solder for $15 plus postage plus delay.
The 8810w available at some Walmarts is a good alternative that does have the pins built in. The 15-2116 from Radio Shack seems popular with a lot of JP1'ers. It also has pins built in.
Most Walmarts don't stock the 8810w, so call in advance if it's out of your way to drive (and give them a hard time if they don't stock it, because they ought to).

Also, at least one of the remote sellers at Rob's site (BlueDo?) offers a combination JP1 cable/8811 remote package deal. (8811 is identical to 8810w, except that it's not sold by WM).

It looks like the RS-2116 received best reviews. Since my local radio shack has em (unlike the oneforall where no walmart carries em), ill pick one up for $30. Im guessing the clearmax code (found here: http://www.hifi-remote.com/cgi-bin2/ueic.cgi?cbl_clearmax" is for both one for all and radio shack. ill try it out. then if i like the remote, ill order the JP1 premade cable.
thanks for all your help!

RS and OFA remotes both use the same type of codes. As for the Clearmax, if you're getting a JP1 cable you can add a proper code for it rather than doing all those key moves.

RS-2116 Rox! what a dream! was able to program the clearmax under VCR and had it learn all the keys. So since the JP1 will allow me to program it correctly, then hopefully i can setup "My System" feature. The my system feature doesnt work on learned buttons. Even got the Macro key working. the remote feels great too. nice and smooth. all 6 of my devices work. 5 of them straight from the manual. clearmax was some work. next stop: JP1 cable. thanks for all your help..

You can also buy the cable here for $18 shipped: http://www.hovisdirect.comRob It's good to see some East coast representation here (N.C.) with Hovis Direct. It seems like all vendors that I usually deal with are on the West side of the Mississippi river which equates to longer shipping times. |Also, at least one of the remote sellers at Rob's site |(BlueDo?) offers a combination JP1 cable/8811 remote |package deal.
