Learning or Advanced Codes on Cinema 6/7?

From what I've read, everything you can do with learning feature on the Cinema 6/7 (code 975) you can do with Advanced code programming. However, from what I've read in the posts, advanced codes take up less memory. So why would I ever want to use the learning function?

Am I completely off base? Also is it true that code 980 will clear the Learned codes, macros and advanced codes, but leave your proprogrammed device codes?

Thanks

Many devices' features aren't supported with advanced codes. If there's a function you want on your original remote and you can't find an advanced code for it your only option is to LEARN it to a button. Advanced codes use a different memory area than the learned codes. They do not compete for space. So, if you're resisting using the learn-ability of your remote because you want to save room for advanced codes, you're wasting the learned memory. If you've got it, you might as well use it.

Yes, the SETUP (two blinks) 980 sequence erases all extra programming you've done, but NOT the device codes you've entered. Try SETUP 981 if you want to start from complete scratch.

I am hesitant to add the MAGIC-9-8-1 info in the FAQ because it may affect "upgrade" data done by the company.

While the Cinema 7 isn't upgradeable in the same sense as the other OFA remotes, I'm not sure if doing a "981" reset will wipe out any "factory" stored data.

Gerard, you are correct. A 9-8-1 reset produces a completely "clean slate", including clearing out any factory stored data. 99% of the time this will cause no problem, but you do run the risk of losing any last minute additions that might have been made to the remote's library. And as we all know, Murphy is lurking out there ...

Thanks guys for the responses.

So what would you recommend for someone just starting out programming their Cinema 6 / 7? Should I start with programming using the Learning method until I run out or memory and then go to the Advanced codes or, the other way around or do a bit of both? I guess I'd like to know the memory capacity of the advanced codes. Also Which memory pool does the macro share? If it shares the same pool as the advanced codes, it would make sense to get the macros in as soon as possible if they are necessary since they probably take up quite a bit of memory.

Thanks

PS - I have tried the 980 reset and it works great. It kept my preprogrammed devices, but cleared my learning codes and macros.

There are 180 progam "units" in a Cinema6 or Cinema7. Any 994 advanced code or key move takes 4 units. Macros share this same memory, but each step (button press) in a macro uses only one memory unit.

Learn memory is a different memory area, and independant of advanced/move/macro memory. IR codes vary in size, so the number you'll be able to learn depends on that size, as the learned memory area is fixed.

I'd suggest starting with advanced codes for functions not included with the default device code, if you have them. Fill in the functions you can't program this way with ones learned from your original remote(s).
