I just picked up a OFA 8810w at my local walmart for $25. Is this the same as the 8811? It appears the same and it does have a JP1 connector. Also there is no pin1 indicator on the connector. Can you damage anything by connecting it backwards? Thanks.

there's been some confusion lately about what some people are calling "the jp-1 connector" A true jp-1 connector has male pins (6) whereas the jp-1 capability has just the six holes where the pins need to be soldered in. To clarify what you mean, does the remote you got at WW got the 6 male pins, or just the 6 holes present. See the documentation at rob's site (www.hifi-remote.com) as to where the #1 pin is located. I believe it's in a document by tommy tyler. If it's not there, check the files at the JP-1 yahoo chat group.

James,

No confusion on my part. As I said, it has a connector (just like the 8811). The RS 15-1994 has a pin 1 indicator on it's connector but the new OFA remote does not. It's probably oriented the same as the RS. I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't hurt anything if it was put on backwards. Oneforall.com does not have the new models on it's web site yet so I can't the difference between a 8810w and 8811 (if there is any). Maybe the w is for walmart and it's a specific model just for them.

To the best of my knowledge, the Wal-Mart versions are exactly the same as the regular versions, so the URC-8810w is the same as the URC-8811.

There is no risk of doing damage by connecting it the wrong way around, but I'm pretty sure it's alligned the same way as the 15-1994. I know I connected my URC-8011 without giving it any thought (ie, I forgot to look for the pin1 marker).

You'll find that KM and IR are ready for you (but you will need to download the RDF for the 8811/8011 as it's not in the IR.exe ip file yet.

I have had my 8810w for about two weeks and it is the same as the pictures of the 8811. The JP-1 orientation is the same as the other OFA remote (15-2104). Number one is the top right pin if looking at the back (with the batteries at the bottom). The only thing that I have noticed is that I have to tape in the batteries (or else they fall out). Also the buttons that are available in each mode (TV, VCR, RCVR, etc.) is much less than other remotes. (Suspect it may be do to the Home Theather button...which assigns the remote buttons to different devices.) KM and IR work fine.

I just bought an 8810W today. Pin 1 IS marked if you look closely - there's a slight notched corner on the white etching around the JP1 connector. It is oriented the same as Pin 1 on a 1994/2104.

Very nice unit, I like the 50+ buttons! (This is the closest thing yet to Rob's "Perfect Remote", it even has Previous/FRew and Next/FFwd keys.)

Small quibbles: I also hate the way the batteries fall out, why couldn't they include the little tabs that the 7200/7800 had?

The manual has tiny text, too. Very hard to read the new codes - and OFA doesn't have an online manual yet for the 8811/8810W (or any info on this remote).

But that's minor, what a great remote! I wouldn't consider buying a 15-2104 at $20 now that you can get this superior remote for $5 more.

Radio Shack, where's your version!

JayE, you're right about the "W" distinguishing a Wal-Mart exclusive model number. They did this with the Apex AD-1100W DVD player as well. (Except this DVD player is not available elsewhere in the USA, under any model number.) I hope the 8810W is identical to the 8811 but was sure enough to go ahead and buy it. I bet Wal-Mart doesn't want to have to price match 8811 sales at other discount stores.

Oh, a good sign that this is the 8811 - the manual refers to the remote as the URC-8811 (twice, at least)!

Should all Walmart stores carry this remote? I checked my local Walmart (Laguna Niguel, CA) and I was not able to find it.

The information that I have is that only a select few WM stores have the URC-8810w, as they are evaluating how well it sells, but all stores should have the URC-6012w.

I didn't see it at the San Clemente Walmart the other day either, just 6012s.

My stupid local WW doesn't even have the 6012w. However, they do have about 10 7201's at 14.96 a pop :( . Fact is, they don't carry any learning remotes. I was lucky last year to get a 6800 for around 15.00, they had them one shipment, and not all that many, maybe 8-10. Maybe I should have stopped in the super store I was by the other day about 110 miles from here?

I predict that sales will be very, very bad. . .based on my experience with WW. I found the 8810W (actually, about 5 of them) on the bottom shelf, hidden away out of sight and below all of the RCA and other remote trash. If you didn't know exactly what you were looking for, and didn't hunt a bit, you would never have found them. Guess WW isn't much dedicated to OFA, eh?

I don't know, they might sell well. I have two Super Center Wal-Marts nearby and one had eight 8810Ws while the other had about 10 6012Ws. It was exactly as Dave said, both stores had them buried under boring remotes - way below eye level. I nearly fell over seeing the 8810W and of course bought one.

A week later, the 8810Ws were gone and there are about two 6012s. The junk remotes still are there so someone else here in Boise knows a little about remotes.

I hope Wal-Mart gets serious about the 8810W, it's sure a winner.

Bringing this thread up from the dead ...

I located one 8810w at my local Wal-Mart today. There was only one on the shelf. Actually, it was stacked with the 6xxx remotes from OneForAll and didn't have its own dedicated section on the shelf. It appears that availability at Wal-Mart is still spotty and they're not fully supporting the stock of this device.
