Garage sales? Those are some pretty old models, and they lack the type of keys required to control many modern devices, that have on screen displays, picture-in-picture, etc.
There are modern upgradeable remotes, such as the Producer 8 line from OneForAll. Because of the factory upgradeability, these sell in the range of $70+. And they aren't liked as well as cheaper remotes like the 15-1994.
The 15-1994 from Radio Shack is designed to be upgradable, but the manufacturer doesn't build upgrading into the sales price, so they don't upgrade them. The JP1 hacking effort has developed the tools to build a PC interface, and associated software, to allow this great $30 remote to be user-upgraded. See
