I just picked up the Radio Shack 15-1994 remote today, and find it pretty handy. But I'm having trouble with input selection for my Marantz SR-5000 receiver.

1. There are, of course, no dedicated buttons on the 1994 for amp input selction.

2. I tried learning the DVD, VCR, etc. buttons from the Marantz remote, but this didn't work. More on this below. But I did confirm that I can learn other buttons from the Marantz remote (e.g. Power), and so indirectly showed that the memory was not full.

3. Using Rob's excellent site, I found the advanced codes for device 0269 (and confirmed this device code by blinking back). However, it seems that input selection is not included in the advanced codes. I did confirm, however, that I could use these codes, by assigning code 300 (Power) to the L4 button as a test. I could then use the L4 button to power the amp on or off.

4. I read the FAQ's on this site and Rob's, and searched these forums, so I'm aware of similar problems. For example, it may be that the input selection buttons on the Marantz remote use a different device code.

The weird thing about the Marantz remote's input selection buttons is that you have to press them twice to switch to that input on the amp. Pressing them once has the same effect as pressing a device key on the 1994: you can then press other keys dedicated to that device.

So I tried different ways of learning these buttons:

a. pressing the Marantz button once
b. pressing the Marantz button twice
c. holding the Marantz button down for 5-10 seconds

but in no case does the 1994 give the 2-blink confirmation. Of course in each case I then tried to use the 1994 anyway to change the input on the amp, but no luck.

Has anyone else had this problem and overcome it? I'm not really into building any JP1 stuff. Ideally, I'd just like to be able to get the 1994 to learn these buttons.

Thanks,

David

Hi

I was able to solve this problem, with information from my man Fabio (who is looking for help on a separate problem on the Marantz SR-5000 in a recent post).

The deal is that input selection is not covered by any commands in device code 0269. Each input selection is effected by a unique device code, followed by an advanced code. This advanced code is 274 for every device except for DVD. It may work, but if not, use advanced code 443.

The device codes are as follows:

TV 0037
VCR 0081
AUX 0463 (satellite code)
TUNER 0189
AMP 0269
CD 0157
TAPE 0029
DVD 0539

(NB: this is the info that Fabio sent to me, which he received from OFA support. I can only vouch for VCR, DVD, Tuner, and CD -- the only inputs I care about.)

Based on the manuals and FAQ at Rob's site ([Link: hifi-remote.com]), I'm sure you'll figure out a way to use these codes. If it helps, what I did was to temporarily assign each of these device codes in turn to the the AUX2 button, then copied the advanced code in question from there to an AUX button, like so:

1. Hold down Magic until the light blinks twice.
2. Enter code 994 (the red light will blink twice).
3. Press the device key that you are moving the function from, e.g. AUX2.
4. Press Magic once and let go.
5. Enter 274 (or 443 for DVD only).
6. Press the device key that you are moving the function to, e.g. AUX.
7. Press the key where you would like that function to be, e.g. numeric key 1.
8. The red light should blink twice and that key should now operate.

When I was done, I then assigned AUX2 to device code 0189, which, incidentally, is the tuner device code for the SR-5000. (This has nothing to do with the input buttons, of course.)

Now that I've got input selection working, I can say that the 15-1994 is really the greatest.

If anyone would like further info, including the full text of the message from OFA support, send me an email.

David
