I have read through much of this forum and these three remotes come up a lot. Rob, you seem to be the resident expert - and you also seem to lean towards the Cinema 7 over the Producer 8. I bought a Producer 8 but it has the "low battery" memo with every key press so it is going back. After reading this forum and your comments, I am half convinced that the active members of this forum prefer the Cinema 7. So, a little help with the decision - get another Producer 8 or try the Cinema 7. I don't mind programming and would prefer flexibility over ease of set-up.

Cinema 7 or 15-1994 can learn to every key - Producer 8 can only learn on the dedicated learning keys.

The Producer 8 has more memory and device codes built in and I think one for all will upgrade it if you buy a component it doesn't have. Rob and friends have figured out the hardware/software to upgrade the C7 - 1994 but may not have all the codes needed.

The three are laid out differently: I prefer the C7 - Rob is a 1994 fanatic. TheProducer 8 is a lot bigger.

In my opinion the producer 8 is a step back from the C7 for a lot more money.

Thanks Jim. I bought the Producer 8 and the Cinema 7. After one day I,m convinced that the 8 is going back. The Cinema 7 is so much more flexible and easier to handle. I also like the ability to configure any of the buttons the way I want.

What about the sleep button. I don't need the function but it does not seem to take advanced codes. Is there any way to make use of the button?

Hey Tom,
Have you given the 15-1994 a try yet? It's true that it doesn't have as many device codes as the C7, but if it has all the codes you need I think it's better than the C7, but that's just my opinion.

As for the SLEEP button, her's how it works. If your device has a built-in sleep function, the sleep button will probably activate it. If there isn't a built-in sleep function, then the remote will substitute it's own built in sleep function. There are instructions on how to use it in both your original manual and the manuals on my site.

THere is an extra feature on the 15-1994 that isn't on the C7, which allows you to override the SLEEP button to always use the remotes sleep timer, using the 970 command.

You can't program anything to this button from theremote, but by using our hacking methods, when you create a new device code you can put whatever function you like on this button, I tend to use it for disrete OFF functions myself.

Rob,
What are your "hacking methods?" I've been through your site and I guess I missed it. I am referring to putting a different function on the sleep button of my Cinema 7.

You need to build an upgrade box in order to hook your remote up the your PC, then you can build new device codes with whatever function you likeon the SLEEP button.

The section of my site that covers this is at [Link: hifi-remote.com] but most of the on-line discussion happens in the "JP1" group at [Link: groups.yahoo.com]
