The remote control for the Pioneer VSX-D709S is a Universal Electronics model "Catalyst 48". I'm thinking about picking this model up to control my system. My current reciever, the Pioneer VSX-D608, has a poor remote. I was initially thinking about the RS 15-1994 but I can't stand the button labels (AUX1,AUX2?) and poor memory, but it has (in my opinion) superior button layout compared to the Cinema7.

My questions are has anybody used this remote? How extensive are its learning capabilities? Can macros be programmed (I don't think so but???)? Since this is a UEI model, will the advanced and discrete codes work? (the programing seems identical to the others).

The big plus in this remotes favor is its button layout, and all the features are silkscreened nicely, since I have a predominatly Pioneer system. No backlight, but I'll survive. From Pioneer the remote is $79. Any comments?

FYI: the devices I need to program are:
Pioneer VSX-D608 Reciever
Pioneer 525 DVD Player
Pioneer Laserdisc Player
Pioneer CD Player
Pionner Tape Deck (havn't used it in two years though)
Panasonic PT-61HX40 HD Ready TV
JVC S-VHS VCR

I haven't seen this particular remote before, but I do have a Catalyst 48 that was branded to go with the Outlaw Audio system.

These remotes have learning ability, but it's optional. Outlaw decided not to get it, so the Outlaw remote cannot learn, maybe the Pioneer can.

If it does have learning ability, the memory limit will be exactly the same as the 15-1994.

Macro ability is also optional, but you should be able to use advanced/discrete codes on it.
