Well I'm one of those cheap people who won't spring for a Pronto or Marantz remote so I opted to find one that would be suitable until something better in the $100+ range comes along.

Anyway, I read a lot about this remote on this forum and it seems people just don't know what they're talking about or I can't read. (It's probably the later)

I have a Sherwood Newcastle preamp and read this remote was very good for Sherwood equipment. Unfortunately about the only thing that works (using code 0491) is VOL. And you have to keep pushing it to raise or lower it. You can't just push the buttons down, that doesn't work. Even the power button doesn't work. There is a sleep timer and test tone generator button. WOPPEE!

Secondly, I read from a URC-7800 owner that it worked perfectly with his Pioneer player except he had to program the SEL button for the ENTER command. Well, this remote only has 4 specific buttons to program. I should have known that by just looking at it in the store. It has L1, L2, L3, L4. I was really hoping I could just learn the rest of the commands but NOPE.

I think I'm going to give it a rest with the remotes with preset codes, they are completely useless. Even the Home Theater Master (non learning) I got with my Sherwood can't control 75% of my Pioneer's DVD functions.

So, can anyone recommend a learning remote where all the keys on it can be learned, and is not too expensive?

Thanks!

Ok, I was wrong about the learning part. You can learn almost all of the buttons.

Still, I have to learn just about every button just for my Sherwood.

Is there a code besides 0491 and 0502 that will work for the Sherwood?

Jeff,
You need to do alot more reading. Learning things should always be your second choice if you have found a device code that works for at least some of the buttons. If you have found a device code you should program the missing buttons using advanced codes.

The reason the volume button didn't repeat (ie, keep working when you hold it down) is most likely because you learned it poorly. Did you hold the source button down until the URC-7800 indicated the learning was complete, or did you release it too early? If, as I suspect, it's the latter case, this would explain why it's not working properly.

Have you visited this web site yet: http://www.hifi-remote.com

Rob, I haven't even started learning yet. My gripe is that this thing does not work with my Sherwood and this is why I got it rather then the Radio Shack 1984 remote (or whatever the model # is).

The volume buttons work with the Sherwood code but that's pretty much it, except for some other useless things. However, like I said, you can't hold the volume down.

I know I can learn with all the keys but I didn't want to have to use up all my learning commands with just the Sherwood, although I should have a few left over. I just hope that's enough.

Maybe the 0491 code is using the wrong protocol for the Sherwood. The Sherwood uses the NEC protocol, but there are two dfferent versions of it, the first version just sends a two byte string when you hold the button down, the second repeats the complete signal. If the Sherwood is expecting the second style, but the remote is sending the first style, the result is that the buttons will work as "once only" buttons but won't repeat.

BTW, you might also want to give the RCVR/0502 code a try.

If you really want to get to the bottom of this, and you know how to work a soldering iron, you might want to build yourself an upgrade box for this remote, then you can create a device code that will work your Sherwood exactly. In fact, if you would have prefered the Radio Shack 15-1994 to the Cinema 7, you should get it and add the Sherwood code to it.

I have seen in a other post concerning the RS 1994 that the code listed for RCA recivers does not work for the RCA rt-2500, is there any remedy for this (updated programming by the factory, learning, ect..) or will the remote just not work for this device.

Mitch,
I think you misread the previous posts, this thread concerns the Sherwood receiver, not the RCA receiver.
