I'm considering purchasing a Nevo and I'm wondering if what I want to do is possible.

I have MP3s on my networked PC and multiple devices on the network which can play them:

2 networked DirecTV DVRs
GoVideo 2730 Networked DVD player
Hauppauge Media MVP

Today I have to view these device's output on the TV, navigate the menus, and select a song to play it.

What I'd like to do is select a song on the NEVO (which would be connected to my wireless network) and have it push that track to the above device(s) and automatically play. This way I could sit on my deck, pick a song on the remote and listen to it on the deck speakers which are attached to a receiver in the basement with the above devices connected to it...no need to view the device menu on the TV.

If this can be done but not with the above devices, with what devices CAN it be done ?

Next question is..could I send different songs to different devices in different rooms simultaneously ?

Hi,

Yes you can.

You need a S70 to do this.

The most important bit is a UPnP Server and Player. I don't know your gear but check if it is UPnP compatible.

The Remote needs to see a server to get the music info and a player to play the music back on with.

Im sure if you google UPnP server/players you will find what you need.

OK..so if the server and renderer are UPnP compliant, then it can be done ?

All of these devices can connect to UPnP servers and pull content. Does that mean they can be controlled (ie PUSHED TO) as well or do they have to be UPnP AV compliant ?

You say I'd need an S70..would an SL not work ? If so, what's the difference in the two that would make an S70 work but an SL not work ?

That is correct.

So long as the device has a UPnP server the Nevo should see it. IE all bits have to be UPnP compliant with either a functioning Server or Player aspect to them.

The SL has long been superseded. You would be much better off with a S70. I do not recommend using a SL for this job. May people have and still do us a SL for this but the S70 does a much better job.

Syd,

I did not think the S70 suported UPnP any longer? I thought it was either Zwave RF or Wi-Fi 802.11x. but no longer UPnP. I cannot find any S70 specs which indicate it is still UPnP. Can you show it is indeed still UPnP?

Hi Dave,

The S70 absolutely supports UPnP. It falls under the "control digital content" banner.

I have run simple center (use it in demos) and the Imerge S3000 on the S70 with no dramas. Works even better than the SL. I have even had limited success with sonos, very limited though.

All of these devices I listed connect to UPnP media servers and the media servers see them. However, I played around with Cidero and while it did see these devices on the network (per the log), it did not add them as renderers. I may have missed something that I needed to do in Cidero as I'm not familiar with the software but when they didn't show up there as renderers, I took that to mean they are UPnP but not UPnP AV compliant...ie, not controllable via UPnP.

Has anyone had success CONTROLLING any of these devices ?

Hi,

No sorry I have never seen any of the gear mentioned. I am in Australia where we have limited access to these things.

I have seen Logitech squeeze box working and a Twonky server working.

Hopefully someone else has seen your equipment and possibly even used them.

Thanks for the info Syd!

Well, it has been this way for awhile. UPnP has not been a standard to trust completely as some manufacturers seem to mess with the standard when they manufacturer a device. As it was with the Nevo SL, not everything thats says it is UPnP compliant works as a Nevo UPnP device.
