I found a very good deal for a new S70 and extender on eBay. The guy has good ratings and emailed me that the purchase would be "legitimate" so that I would be covered by the warranty and be eligible for tech support and updates. Why should I believe that?....Otherwise the closest official dealer is several states away from me. I'm sure the official dealer price is going to be a lot more too....What to do? Advice? thanks.

If the S70 were a long-established remote that had a very stable history, I could understand going the cheapest route and taking the risk of no warranty coverage. Maybe. If you're really strapped for cash. But I personally would be reluctant to buy a product as new as the S70 and risk a possible total loss if it's defective.

Anybody could call a sale "legitimate." When you think about it, that doesn't really mean anything. On the other hand, if he can prove that he is an authorized Nevo dealer or if you can verify this by contacting Nevo, the remote should have full warranty coverage. Like everything else, you often get what you pay for. Support when you need it on these remotes has very real value, and I believe it's worth paying for, even if that means bypassing the lowest-cost source.

Less than 1k for both the remote and extender. Why? Are you interested? :-)

I got my S70 from Ebay for £430 and I am well happy with it. I had read all the reasons why not to use Ebay but for the cost I could almost have brought 2 for the retail price in UK so not too worried if it goes wrong and Nevo wont help. Its a risk I was ok to take. The guy I brought it from has a TV/Electronics shop in the USA and said I had a years warranty and any issues he would deal with returns. I have contacted him a few times since with issues setting it all up and he has been nothing short of brilliant.
I also found that this board was great for some other setup problems I have had.

As an authorized Nevo reseller, you never know what you are going to get on flea-bay. Mostly box-movers who do not have a clue about the remote and are usually buying sideways from some authorized dealer. Often times buying sideways also voids the warranty as they cannot really afford to take a replacement or customer service position. We used to call this grey-market in the computer business and it applies here as well.

Don't buy something like a high-quality remote from flea-bay.

There is no warranty for Nevo remotes bought through internet sales or ebay.
Warranty and Support are only provided by Nevo Authorzied Dealers.

hehee - well, I experimented with selling them fully programmed on Ebay. Which is a lot better solution than buying one from someone who can barely spell Nevo, never mind have no knowledge of the product or usage. Also, was selling just a programming package. But, by no means could anyone call us regular eBay seller. Or should I say flea-bay seller?

I bought my Q50 on ebay and the seller won't even reply to my emails. This product is not stable enough for me to recommend it to anyone. Seems like just about everyone has had some sort of issue, and there is really zero support. I would pay a dealer to help but you can't even get that. Nevo remotes won't out live the por battery they contain.

These are your only options. The first one is your best shot at service and warranty.

#1.Hire someone local for the complete install & programming.
#2.Find someone local to sell you the remote at retail so they will honor the warranty.
#3.Find a legitimate Nevo dealer that is not local but willing to sell you a Nevo remote and honor the warranty.
#4.Buy it from the guy on ebay and assume your not going to hear from them again
#5.Buy something else.

Hey guys, I'm confused about the whole e-bay thing. These remotes are not cheap (even on ebay they're 2-3 times the cost of a Harmony 890 - worth it, but still) and they are fairly new to the market (S70s at least). So where are the ebay remotes coming from if not authorized by UEI?

The only thing I can think of is an authorized dealer is selling remotes to someone who is then selling on ebay. In that instance I would expect that UEI is still getting the same amount per remote as they would get if the dealer sold it at full retail, the dealer is just not getting as big a cut, if any. So why would UEI not honor the hardware warranty for ebay sales? To try to get people to buy from a dealer perhaps? But then they do nothing to try and stop the ebay sales. I can certainly see saying you're on your own for programming and configuration, no help desk or phone support, but if the product is physically defective surely they should offer to replace it.

I don't mean to offend anyone, just curious. I admit I bought mine on ebay before I even really knew anything about them, it just seemed like a really cool remote. Pretty much knew I'd be on my own (with google) to figure out how to get it working, and everyone here has been a great help, but to hear that UEI won't stand behind it in regards to manufacturing defects is a bit of a shock. It's brand new sealed in the box and I certainly don't believe it's stolen, so that seems legitimate to me. It also seems to be a bit of a conflict of interest, and if I were a dealer I'd be pretty upset with UEI for either not trying to put an end to ebay sales or at least accepting them openly. I mean, if an S70 sells on ebay and assuming UEI still gets the same revenue, but has none of the risk of supporting a warranty, why would they ever want a dealer to sell one?

many manufacturers have strict rules about ebay/internet selling. some spend more time going after the people selling their product on ebay than others.

the reason it is against the rules to sell a Nevo remote online, is so the pricing of the remotes stays consistent. these remotes are intended to be a money maker for dealers, not just another Harmony remote that can be bought anywhere really cheap with very little markup. I think it is a good thing that Nevo stands behind their dealers and follows their warranty rules to the letter.

I'm sure if Nevo found out that one of their dealers was selling product on ebay, they would no longer be a dealer. Companies like Nevo realize that they need a strong dealer network to survive. If they didnt have these policies in place, then it wouldnt be worth it for the dealer to carry the Nevo product.
