Could someone explain what making a serial command "repeatable" means? I assumed it simply meant that the command would be sent repeatedly if the button was held down, but it doesn't seem to have that effect.

I was planning to program the volume commands on a couple components such that continuously holding the button would ramp the volume up/down. (And perhaps a similar use for TiVo channel changes.) I made the commands repeatable but still get only one incremental change per button push.

So am I doing this wrong? Is it possible to make buttons "continuous" in this way? And again, what does making a command repeatable do, if not this? Thanks much for any help.

Hi,

You are correct. It repeats the command while the button is pressed.

If you provide more info on what you are controlling and an example command we may be able help further.

Sure. The two components are a Denon processor and a Pioneer plasma. Their volume commands are pretty straightforward (using Vol down commands):

For the Denon: MVDOWN (with \r end delimiter)
For the Pioneer: **VOLDW2 (or: 02 2A 2A 56 4F 4C 44 57 32 03 HEX)

In both cases, I checked "Repeatable" but the Q50 seems to send just one iteration per button push.

Okay, a little update...and a revised question. I figured out the reason that it wasn't repeating. I had put "Mute Off" commands on the the volume buttons as well, so that I wouldn't have to go back to the mute button to "disengage" it. Removing that command allows the repeatable volume commands to repeat, like I wanted.

But now, the problem is that the volume ramps so slowly that it's almost quicker to just do rapid button pushes. Either method is pretty slow and annoying, since the Denon ramps in 0.5dB increments. With IR control, it ramps MUCH faster, at speeds that feel "normal."

Any suggestions for making this faster?

(BTW, thanks much, sydinstaller, for all your help around here. It hasn't gone unnoticed that you're usually the first to offer solutions and your patience and helpfulness are truly appreciated.)

Hi,

Glad to help.

In the RS-232 section there is a Delay (ms) section. The default is 250ms. You could try setting it to 100ms.

I have the same issue with Onlyo/Integra amps.

My suggestion would be to send a volume preset when a input is selected that way only small adjustments are required.

Thanks for that. I was wondering about the delay. So it sounds like it simply sets the time between commands. Does setting it too low just cause erratic response, and is determining the right setting for a particular component just a matter of trial and error?
