i need a reliable remote to control my now "out of easy IR reach devices" and i dont trust this unit to do that (due to low battery life and many other annoying inconveniences that i have read about here, that quite frankly would have me smashing it to pieces). i am now finding myself, after spending over $1000 just over a year ago, looking for a new remote. : ( i mean for christ sake, i dont even know what i am going to do when the battery dies. i guess i'll have a $1000 paper weight. i know nevo reps surf this site, why hasnt anyone had the decency to let us know how to replace the battery? we've been discussing it since i bought the unit! they just did an update that i thought would be promising so i could use wifi reliably, but no bueno. its sounds like its worse than ever. sorry for the rant guys, just feeling a little frustrated right now.

Hey Stealth
sorry to hear that. i am looking at getting one and was prepared to dock it regularly because i want to use the Wifi. let's face it, that is the thing that is cool about this thing. There are many other remotes out there that can do the non-wifi things this remote can, but having two-way communication is where it's at here.
Your enthusiastic posts on this site have kept me thinking that this is the remote for me and now this! My whole idealised remote world shot to hell!
Hope you find what you're looking for (The Pronto Pro also has the wifi option but the price and two handed operation leave me wondering)
Cheers

hi kits boy, long time reader, 1st time poster eh? haha
i'm pretty disappointed myself as i have been a very strong supporter of this product and have been very vocal about it. now i realize a yr later that UEI just doesnt seem to have their act together enough to justify the cost of this remote. as a standard IR remote I LOVE IT. but now i require more and dont trust it will do what i want without causing me many hours of frustration.
FYI there are other issues, ie: runaway commands, that also have yet to be addressed by UEI. so not only am i dissapointed, but i just cant feel good about recommending this unit to anyone anymore. and lets face it , you would have thought i owned shares in UEI before! LOL

Steath,
Nevo has already replaced some batteries in their repair facility so when the time comes, I trust they will have something in place.
If you don't want to try wi-fi then buy a Niles IR repeater system for around the same price as a NevoLink. They work very well.

Dave thats good advise, thanks Dave, i will actually probably do just that. i sincerely apologize to the many dealers that frequent these threads for the negative post about this product. however i'm sure anyone here can understand my (and others) overall frustration with this unit. i will stand firm I LOVE MY NEVO as a stand alone IR remote, but for the $$$ i speant on it, it should really be RELIABLY more than that.

WOW....this isn't the Stealth I know!
Like Dave said, try an IR repeater, I use Xantech's. I have used it ever since WiFi drained my unit everyday for the first few weeks. Works great!

i actually feel bad for starting this thread, to the point i don't even want to respond so it will just sink to the depths - i stand by what i said, but given the $ involved in a new remote, and the whole WIFE factor ;-), i'll be sticking with what i have and DEFINATELY get an IR repeater.
i'll tell you what has been holding me off from this, is that i dont like the idea of those little sticky things on the front of my devices with the wires hanging down.... are they ALL like that?
actually don't answer here, lets let this thread die. i'll pose this question in the HOME THEATRE SECTION.
thanks again gents.

Wow. Interesting thread. Sorry to keep this going, but there is more to this I think.
I'm sure this remote is great and that the IR is just fabulous, but without RF this remote can only justify the hefty price tag with the Wifi. Surely this is the most interesting feature of the remote. Two way communication is where it's at: able to display playlists, song/media titles etc for use with a media server. That's what this remote promises. Get a Pronto (non Pro) that's proven itself over years and has RF if that's not why you want this. Those work just great and can be had for less.
No disrespect to those using this remote for IR only and are happy with it.
I am prepared for a bad battery life with this remote and Wifi. I am hoping Nevo will come up with some fixes, but I must say that I am not holding out hope since that is an area where Nevo seems to be letting down its customers.
Stealth: I hope you find a great option that works for you.

Kits Boy, you are right about the wifi is one reason this remote is so expensive. I've never used my wifi, and really didn't care if it worked or not. The other real reason for getting this remote is it is REALLY simple to program, and much more ergonomic than a pronto. I've had Pronto's for years, and loved them, but this remote blows them away. I've had the Pronto 2000, 3000, and 7000, and while I liked being able to swap batteries on the pronto, and hate the battery life on the Nevo, I wouldn't trade it for a 7500. Now a 9600, that's a different story, and may be my next remote when the price is right.

Those are all great reasons to buy the Nevo, and i am seriously considering it.
Like I said, in my view the Wifi is what sets it apart. Combine this with UPnP two way control of a NAS (or similar) and you've got a great way to select and serve media files without needing to have the TV on. Seeing that the UPnP support is suspect (this could be a problem with the standard generally)and the battery life on Wifi is terrible it just loses its glow.
There may be some work-arounds for these problems (using a IR repeater for all control of hidden devices and somehow selecting Wifi to on only when you want to get into your media drive) but that is finding compromises on an item with a hefty price tag.
Maybe I'm just wanting something that is a couple of generations away. The 9600 goes a bit further but lacks UPnP support so only Escient products are currently an option for media serving, and they lack video serving support (from what I can tell) and the form factor is two handed as opposed to the generally praised one handed and highly ergonomic form factor of the Nevo.
Thanks for your input.

Guys, I have the new 2.0.2.597 software/firmware build downloaded and the wi-fi is working famously. One thing, the firmware update changes the wi-fi settings in the NevoSL so you have to put your "authentication" and "encryption" info back in or it will look like it's broken (good strength but invalid IP and not connection to NevoLink). Nevo folks say that this should solve most of the wi-fi woes of the past... exceptions being that the battery life is still only about 3-4 hrs. I did fnd that the NevoSL works just great from the cradle, so I put it on the end table at my end of the couch. Tried it both IR and using wi-fi (NevoLink) with great success. I love it. but my wife is still sceptical. Of course, she still thinks of my PC as a bigger Playstation.... Well I do read email too.

I have endured nevo for over a year now...9600 knocks it over the garfield sobers boundary, except only for a one-bouncer because of the no upnp...we use requests and/or mediamax, even experinet (headache!)
ive always found the NS s/ware very slow, dl'ing takes ages, codes disappear, wifi... dont mention the red triangle of death!
that said, new s/w and f/w seems a bit better...we'll see

Guys,
Look, this issue has been thrashed over a lot. There are a LOT of people who have this running very well on wi-fi.
In my estimation, here are the categories of those who have had problems with wi-fi, in no particular order:
1) No updated firmware on the Nevo SL and don't have the latest version of NevoStudio. 2) Have a wap or wi-fi router which does not have the appropriate settings for a low-power CE device (read-Nevo SL). Read the white paper on recommended WAP's and wi-fi routers. 3) Have a WAP or wi-fi router which has too much internet traffic and when they introduce the Nevo SL, it has trouble fighting for bandwidth. Fix=add a dedicated WAP or wi-fi router on a subnet and dedicate it to the Nevo SL. 4) Those who have not read the Nevo SL Networking white paper and have not made the recommended changes to their WAP/wi-fi router. 5) Those who have not modified the system settings as recommened by UEI, re: time out settings, etc. 6) Those with older Nevo SL configs from version 1 of the original NevoStudio.
That's about all I can think of at this moment. Anyone else want to add comments?

One wierd thing I get is that although WIFI is working a treat when the missus leaves the handset off the cradle overnight by accident, not only do you have to reboot the handset to pick up the network but you also have to hard reboot the Nevolink too.
anyone else get this?
