Anyone have trouble opening a .nvo file created on a different machine? I have two PCs with Nevo Studio 2.0 and any time I try to open a file created on the other machine I get a file corrupted error. The files are identical, so there's no reason for it not to open. Also, I can't restore a project from the Nevo on the machine that has the corrupted file error. Perhaps I should try re-installing the software? Oh wait, I have tried that already and it doesn't solve anything.

Are you sending the open file accross a network? Is the file a compressed zip file?

Nope, not compressed or across a network. As a simple test I created a file on one machine, transferred to the other and it won't open. Same byte count, contents are the same. I wonder if there is some conflict with some installs of WinXP (though both machines have the same version) because I also get some weird behavior when trying to restore a project from the NevoSL.

Can you send me the file?

Can you open this file on both of your PC's?

Yep I can open it just fine. I think I got it figured out. I had a custom background image, and once I removed it it opened fine. That is quite strange. I'll have to dig around a bit more and see if there's not more to it because it looked like one of your backgrounds was a custom one as well. Thanks for the help, you'd think there would be a better message other than "file corrupted". Luckily I remembered that there was a custom background in this file (which existed only on the one PC and not the other) and figured why not delete it and see if it'll open.

I'm not so sure it was the background now. OK I've narrowed it down. I removed the custom background, and it still won't open. So I went page by page and it turns out to be a font issue. Apparently I had one page that used Arial Narrow. Once I changed the font to something both PCs had the file opened fine. This is odd behavior, you'd hope for better error messages than that. One would expect the font to default to something else kind of like on a web page. I have a relatively small file, so I couldn't imagine trying to find the proverbial needle in a huge file haystack. I was just lucky I guess.

That was a great catch! Which font were you using? I had used wierd fonts before and downloaded to the Nevo just fine... I assume they sync the fonts during the download time. But never tried moving the project file to different PCs. Oh well... I only have one laptop either way! :-)

The font I didn't have was Arial Narrow. Usually I use something like Tahoma. I believe Tahoma is the font that has to be installed by Windows because the font used by menus and dialog boxes is Tahoma. I guess I just missed a page in my project and it was accidentally set to Arial Narrow when I created it on my laptop. Apparently my desktop PC does not have Arial Narrow.

I contacted Nevo tech support about this, and they responded within 24 hours. Actual disk (file) corruption is pretty rare these days, so they should think about changing that error message to something a little more specific. They should probably do a couple of things, one is to add a file validator that can parse a project file and figure out what external resources such as fonts are missing and give a more specific error message. The other thing they can do is use default generic resources when the specific one is not available. Instead of not letting me into my project file, how about defaulting the Arial Narrow font to something else like a web page does? Obviously Nevo Studio can't control the environments in which project files are created or opened, so at the very least the software should be a little more intelligent than just outright locking you out of your projects.

I got lucky for a couple of reasons. The first being that my project was small, and for me to go through the project to find the offending page wasn't too terribly difficult, just a little time consuming. Secondly, I still had the machine available that created the project file in its original configuration so I still had a PC that could at least open the project file. Had I not had that, I would have been in trouble as there would be no way to open the file and even attempt to correct the "problem".

wow what a pain in the ass. kudos to you for finding a way through it!! i don't know if this is of any relevancy or not, but i was using the font "papyrus" for about 2 weeks, then one day it was just gone from the list of fonts...? it didnt seem to cause any problems for me and over time the papyrus font that i did have in my project has been replaced. strange part is i never noticed having this font till i got my new laptop(6mo ago), and i was using ONLY the laptop to make adjustments, then as i said, one day the font was just gone. kind of a shame too as i was really liking the papyrus font - think Lord of the Rings.
