there are 4 rubber feet on the bottom of the remote that need to be removed.  be careful, it is easy to rip the feet in half.

under them you will find 4 screws.  remove those, then the case can be pryed apart.  i like to use a credit card to get in the gap and pry the remote apart.

be careful of the jog wheel on the side.  it is very easy to break it off if you aren't careful.

once you have the back removed, it is pretty easy to get the battery out.

I tried to take one of the rubber feet out using one of those tiny screwdrivers for tightening screws on glasses. It looks like it was strongly glued in place and now little chunks are still attached to the screw? Is there a better way to do this?

No. The little feet will often tear when removing them.

Just replaced one. The feet were difficult to remove as they were glued over the screws. In the end I don't think they are even needed except as a cosmetic device. Be careful with the scroll wheel, it is poorly designed and could easily break off, mine popped off but was not damaged, just had to finesse it back on and be careful replacing the cover. Got two batteries for $24 through Amazon and a third party distributor called BatteriesInAFlash.com. And no shipping charge. Very happy.
