Allamad & Cuervo, I tried both of your ideas, but I still have the same problem. I checked the Device Mgr to see if my modem is on COM2. It's property box said COM3. I exited Palm Hotsync and also set it so it would not load with Windows. I rebooted and tried the NEO on COM1. Same problems. Then, through regedit I changed the Philips software to COM2 (it was on COM1). I rebooted and had the same problems.

Each time I tried to upload or download, I got an error message that stated something to the effect that my device contained an older firmware and that I needed to update the firmware. Well I have the latest firmware update and I have not gone through any process to specifically update the firmware. I was told it was automatic with NEOedit...is this true? Sounds like I am ain a Catch-22 situation possibly.

What do you think now? I am toast?

My Palm connects to COM1 where I HOTSYNC the Palm and it has worked fine forever

There's your problem, I think. First you can try to disable the software. There's probably an icon next to the clock, where you can deactivate hotsync.
If this doesn't help, try uninstalling the palm software.

Sync managers are really shitty programs, most of the time. (Not only palm) They don't expect to have something attached to a com port, except the device it's looking for.

Monte,

Have you tried running your Palm hotsynch on COM2 ??
This could prove if COM2 is working at all.

On your neo remote, look under the thrid page of the setup screen and see what the version info is:

Should be,

Boot V2.34b
System V1.0.8
App. 1.4.3

Also, have you tried to UP or DL more then one NCF file? As maybe just the one is not working right.

In windows device manager set the comport to the following settings.
Bits per second:9600
Data Bits:8
Parity:none
Stop Bits:1
Flow Control:none
Right click on the hotsync icon in your tray, and choose exit. Plug the neo cable in, and see if the software works.

Allamand,
My info on the NEO does NOT show what you said it should. See list below. The "App" versions on mine is older. I assume this is the firmware. I have downloaded that 2.0.3 file for the firmware update (version 1.4.3??). That's all I have down. How do I update the firmware? Does anybody think I should remove COM1 and COM2 from the hardware list and reinstall them? I am going to try another computer in the house. If I wasn't smoking so much crack I'd have thought of that long ago.

Here's my NEO's info:
Free memory 100%
Boot V2.34b
System V1.0.8
App. 1.3.3.2
CF TSU500 1.1

Let me ask this? Have you hooked up your neo via com cable and ran the firmware update tool? If you haven't maybe you really don't have a com problem at all. If your running the newest version of neoedit and an older version firmware (older than 1.4.3)this could be why you reach the blue screen of death page so many times. I suggest you hook up your neo via the com cable and press the "firmware update tool" icon and select the correct com port and press start update. With luck it will load your neo with the up-to-date firmware. Then you will be able to upload/download from neoedit.

Like John said, the first thing you need to do is update that firmware. The newer software will NOT work, more then likely this is the problem. Also set the com port as Deepcover stated.

To use the firmware updater, you have to install it and then run the program for it to install the update, if this fails, then try and try again. If you know for sure that com 1 works use that. But in my opion, I'd go with Com 2 as you said your modem uses com 3 it could cause a conflict.(Com1 and Com3 share some resoures)

Good luck!

As stated above it sure sounds like the firmware version is going to be your problem, I would focus on that first and take it from there

OK, I'll get the old firmware (1.4.3) from Remotecentral because Philips has that newer on. Somebody mentioned "running" the firmware to update. I was told by Philips that the firmware update is automatic after it is installed. I thought that sounded like wrong.

BIGGER problem. I am digging myself nto a hole. Foolishly, I removed COM1 & COM2 from the Device Manager. This has caused my computer to be excessivley "Microsoftsh" (very unstable and going to the blue fatal protection OE a lot). When I try to install a COM port it adds COM4 & COM5. Apparently, COM1 & COM2 are still there, but I can't get them back. Someone mentioned re-installing Windows OVER the current Windows. Maybe this will fix the prob. How is that done and do you think it will work or is there a better way to get COM1 & COM2 back?

Browse the CD to find the windows executable or setup. Click it and follow the instructions. Back up any important files in case something goes wrong. Or you can reboot with 98 in the cd rom drive.

Why would you install the older firmware? d/l and install the newest firmware, hook up the neo by cable to the computer, launch the firmware updater and follow the instructions until the update complete's. You will see the progress on the screen. After your done check the info on the remote to verify the version #'s are correct. Of course this is to be done AFTER you correct your com issue's.

RWI, Monte, now lost both com 1 & 2 and can't get them back. I, suggested to reload 98 overtop his current 98, which should get him back to working right.

-Just go to the control panel and click on "add new hardware"

If that doesn't find the com ports, add them manual..
