I really didn't have any trouble getting my AVR-4802 to learn codes. I only had problems with my Panasonic plasma display and a couple buttons on my Panasonic DVD player. Different codes I imagine...?

I just uploaded my system which includes a Denon AVR 1602. Don't know if that will help but the model numbers look related.

The AVR2600 predates DD/dts and therefore doesn't have the same input command as newer models do for DVD. The VDP input used on models 2 gens later than yours should still select VDP/DVD on yours. The EXT in should also work. I use an AVR2800 and have had no trouble operating or learning codes for it.

I don't know if this is common knowledge or not, but I found for the best learning performance, hold the button down instead of just pressing and letting go.
Before I started holding the buttons down, there were a number of them that I couldn't learn, afterwards, no problems.
