My Pronto Neo touch screen has stopped responding. Hard buttons still work and display still works, but, when you tap on the screen nothing happens. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Is it a configuration problem or an LCD hardware problem?

This is most likely a Touchscreen problem. The touchscreen actually is mounted above the LCD screen on a different piece of glass. There is a 4 wire ribbon cable that drives the touchscreen. Due to a design flaw in the plastic housing, the ribbon cable breaks. There is a sharp edge in the case that cuts the cable over time. I have successfully repaired the ribbon cable on mine and modified the case. I cannot say on the longevity as of yet, as I it has only been a week.

The fix is done by using a conductive paint. You have to put enough paint to link the traces back together. The traces are layered between 2 layers of plastic. The trick is to get the paint between the crack, to reconnect the trace. I then put a heavy piece of scotch tape on the cable to add strength.

You must also smooth out the sharp edge on the plastic housing. I did this by looking where the cable runs. Using a small piece of sand paper, you must remove this sharp edge. This helps the cable from having to run at such a sharp angle.

If someone is going to throw their Neo away, I would like another remote for testing. If anything, some more parts would be nice...

Chris:

My second brand new Prnoto Neo in 3 years failed the other night - again the touch screen. I would like to try your suggestion on at least one of them. I have a ratchet set with the right screwdriver head, but the neck is too wide. Did you buy a special screwdirver at an electronics store for this purpose? Do you know where you bought yours? I can't seem to find one with a narrow long neck.

Has your repair been holidng up?

Thanks!

I'm experiencing the same problem with my Neo. Its not responding to the touchscreen, but everything else works fine.

I removed the cover with the four screws that attach each plate together. I used a 1/20" allen key. I initially thought it was torx, but the allen key worked fine.

I can see the ribbon cable that attaches the touchscreen. Its on the right side of the screen towards the top (looking down at it). I'll try the conductive paint approach. Right off the bat, it does not appear to be severed anywhere. The edge that is described above would appear to be directly on the screen itself. I might try to use a multimeter to check conductivity on the cable. That would involve getting down to the conductor by sanding/dremeling.

Looking at the connection on the backside of the board, it appears the cable may also dislodge from its connector. I'm going to make sure that mine is correctly set as this would be another point of failure.

How did you use the conductive paint Chris? Did you have to expose the conductor beneath?

Thanks,
Darren

The screwdriver set, I use, came from Radio Shack. I bought it in a set. Nice set, over priced though..

My repair has cracked again.. I have not had time to play with it... I will post when I finally come up with the final solution. The fix does work for a while, but as of now does fail over time..

The touchscreen cable on my Neo broke today as well. Has anyone fixed this using replacement parts? My cable is fully disconnected from the touchscreen element, so I was wondering if there was a way to replace the whole touchscreen panel.

My touchscreen has stopped working and this is the second time now for this remote. First time I sent in to Philips for about $75 I thin it was and they fixed. That was something like a year or so ago.

I think I'll buy a brand new one this time. Hopefully some design change has been done.
