I am leaning toward a HTM MX-850. One of the components I want to control is a Dish 811 receiver (potentially upgrade to a Dish 921). I’m getting mixed feelings from reading the forum here concerning the compatibility between the two. Can the MX-850 (or 800) be programmed to operate the Dish 811 without a PHD in programming (if at all) to be used with the RF function. What to control behind a closed cabinet.

Yes either will work, there is a lot of confusion with dish equipment as the newer oem remote's from dish do not send any ir, however the receivers will respond just fine. Either you can download a file from here or can can learn the ir from the dish receiver (you go into to a menu using the dish remote and point your mx-800/850 at the dish box to learn the codes, I seem to remember reading you have to be 1-2 feet away for this to work right, try searching for more info) of course you will need the mrf200/250 base station to work behind the closet door.

There's a SAT code in the IR Database for the Dish 811 that should give you most of your IR commands. Just look under SAT, Dish Network and you'll see the listing for the 811.

The code for the Dish 811 is SAT 122. Make sure the receiver is set to receive IR commands, since some need to be switched through a menu or by unplugging the RF antenna.

If you want to take advantage of the RF capabilities, you will need the MRF-200/250, since the MX remote will NOT control a component directly via RF. Basically, the remote talks to the MRF via RF and the MRF sends IR via a flasher or frontal IR blaster to the device. My most popular analogy is to say that it works like a cordless phone...the handset only talks to it's base. I hope this guides you in the right direction.

Thank you,
Damon DG
