I have a MX-700 thats about 3 1/2 years old and it has developed a digusting sticky "film" on the outside of its surface. This film cannot be cleaned and it seems like the rubbery surface has begun to "break down" in some way. I keep the remote dry and clean but this problem has also affected my sidekick. The sticky stuff can be scraped away with a sharp knife, revealing smooth plastic underneath, but this chore takes hours of my life away, and leaves an awful mess behind and does not look smooth. Now I have a working remote that looks like crap, and I want to throw it away.. has anyone else had this problem and what causes it?? Has this manufacturing problem been fixed in the newer MX-700s?? because I am about to recommend one to a friend but dont want him crying to me in a couple of years if this is going to happen to him. Does the MX-800, 900 have this problem?

thanks for any info or advice

Yes, I had a sidekick that I cleaned up with ? Goo Gone (or maybe it was windex) because it had a couple of smudges on it. The thing gunked up like mad. It took a couple hours to pull it apart and rub off the sludge. If you don't get the catalyst rubbed off of the chassis it will continue to break down the plastic.

I'd recommend giving URC a call. To me, it would only be right to replace the chassis. I'm sure they're aware of it. I've only seen this on the 700/200's.
Manuals?! We don't need no stinking manuals! a.. er..

thanks, yes at some point I probably windex'ed these and that must have caused it. I will try giving URC a call but I doubt they will sell me a replacement chassis. Anyone else have this problem? If I can tell them its a widespread problem then maybe I will have an easier time convincing them to replace my chassis.

Does this happen to the MX-800 as well? I need to know before I buy one.

I would like to know as well if this affects the MX-800, MX-900, or MX-950. This will definitely affect my decision to buy URC in the future.

LuckMan212,

Please give URC a call. They are very service oriented. If you are comfortable with how to pop the remote open, I'll bet they'll be happy to send the pieces. There might be a small charge, but if my dealings with them are typical, you'll get the pieces for free.

Don't worry about trying to convince them if it's widespread, etc. This is the kind of company that it doesn't matter if it's one customer or 2000. With this kind of issue, I'll bet they make it right.

My original MX-500 had what was called a "soft feel" coating on it, but that got dirty and wore away, so the remote looks pretty crappy now. Goo Gone would just take the soft feel coating away faster.

Yeah, I've got an MX-700 in a similar condition. Sticky, unremovable smudges/dark patches, coating peeling on the edges. It's mostly the beige portion that's an issue. This hasn't happened on my MX-800.

One of my 500's has this problem in an extremely serious manner. My wife will not even touch it. I have 3 other 500's without this problem, 3 600's without it, and one 700 without it. Still have never found what is the cause. It does not occur in merely certain sections of the remote(as could be expected from perhaps some contact with a strange substance), it is on every square centimeter of the service.

I read a review about how the 700 had this problem. It is exactly why I went for the 850. Good post.

Same issue - very sticky on front and back. Remote almost unusable. HTM replaced both the front and back for $30 and I had the remote back in 3 days.

I have that problem with a 700 (& 200) that seemed to be caused from using it in Florida. The SAME remotes I have up in NY DON'T exhibit the problem.

I have had the problem with other things in Florida. The capstans on an expensive RTR recorder turned to mush down here......even with the air conditioning at 74 degrees.
