Hey does anyone know if there is a video for the tutorial for the 3000. I know there is supose to be on line help in the instruction manual or editor ( i cant remember right now) but i tried to pushing the button and nothing happens. I really want to program my own remote but i dont have the patients. Im not stupid or anything, i kinda like things that are straight foward. the 3000 is a little bit much. Compared to my 880 this is rocket science or at least high school science.

Having s-l-o-w-l-y mastered the 'basics' (I'm about to emark on the whole 'variables' thing), I would tell you that it's not really that difficult. Not easy, mind you, but certainly much easier (imho) than the Pronto software. Just be patient, and you'll be rewarded.

If you have not already done so, I would suggest that you download the Editor manual from the Universal website. Read it all the way through without trying to figure it out. If you happen to grasp anything on the first reading, that's great - but not necessary. Then click on 'Program' in the task bar, and follow the steps in order. As you do so, you can refer to the manual with the inevitable questions. And, of course, there are many helpful folks on this forum who will help you to 'fill in the blanks.'

The 3000 is a TERRIFIC remote. As you begin to master the editing software you'll be as happy as I am with the possibilities!

But I digress......

thanks rosariorose9,
I have gotten for the most part how to put indulvidual componets on the remote. Like you said the instructions are for the most part straight forward. I have had mine since thanksgiving. I have a habbit of going from item to item. first i got my psp and you couldent pull me away from it. then I got my harmony 880 and so went the psp. then this mx-3000. I have stayed up night figuring it out. but then i got my xbox 360 and so went the 3000. but now i have a sony dvd changer so i want to get the macros and dmx software working. I think i will have to go the route of damon dg at pro remotes. From what I have heard he does a great job on probramming.

If you have any desire at all to do this on your own I would be happy to help you along. If so, send me your rcc file (email address in profile) and an explanation of what it is that you want to do. Then pick up a Costco 3 cent per min. calling card and give me a call. It's not as hard as you think.

I agree about having a tutorial for the MX 3000. I just got my MX 3000 and just got it programmed for the 1st run thru last night. Tonight I have to test everything to see if I got it right. I was anxious to try to do animation and import pictures, but that seemed be alittle too much for my first programming try. Any tips from anyone? Also, have you tried any of the downloadable files on Remote Central?

Honestly, the Manual is pretty well written. If you take a couple hours and read through it, it's pretty easy to pick up the basics.

True, it is written pretty well. I would like to take the next step PAST the basics. I've looked at some of the custom layouts and designs in the FILES section of Remote Central.com...they all look really great. My questions is this....were those designed in another software like PageMaker or InDesign and transfered onto the software that comes with the MX 3000? I also know the remote is capable of doing animation too. How do I get to that?

The graphics are designed in a graphics editing program, such as Photoshop. You can make buttons or do a full layout there, and then import your graphics to an RCC file in the MX-3000 Editor.

Thank you,

Is PhotoShop the only software you can use for this? I'm pretty good at PageMaker...can you use it?

I am not too familiar with PageMaker. What you need is a graphics program that can:

1. Allows you to save a graphic to a size that will fit into the MX-3000. The screen is 240 pixels tall and 320 pixels wide. Typically you will make backgrounds first, then individual buttons that can be repositioned anywhere on the page and are much smaller. On the actual screen of the MX-3000, each inch measures exactly 72 pixels.

2. Allows you to save a graphic in a file type supported by the MX-3000:

a. PNG files allow you to make buttons that have graduated transparency (like a gradually fading drop shadow beneath the button, that floats transparently anywhere over your background.)
b. GIF files allow you to make buttons that have a single color transparent (this still allows you to float the button anywhere over a background, but does not allow realistic looking drop shadows).
c. JPG or BMP files. These can look great, but are normally relegated to 240 pixel by 320 pixel buttons that sit on the back of the page and serve as backgrounds to the actual buttons.

Note that in MX-3000 Editor everything you see is a button. Buttons that are NOT programmed to do anything, will simply appear as graphic elements of your screen.

Animations are harder. You need to generate a different picture for each "frame" of the animation. There are many programs that are shareware or very inexpensive that create great animations. The MX-3000 supports only one type of animation - Animated GIF files.

If you'd like to try making buttons without animation, one of my favorites is http://www.crystalbutton.com/

This program allows you to make PNG buttons with graduated transparency and is very reasonably priced.

The learning curve for Photoshop is extraordinarily long. I do not recommend you try that, unless you want to become a graphics professional.

Hope that helps!

-Eric
