Looking for a good universal remote that works with my digital cable pvr stb (sa 8300HD)

I have tried a Harmony which I loved but since my Panasonic set doesn't have descreate codes for the input it was not much harmony in my house :-)

So I was looking at either the USC-1000 or 2000 // do these play well with my pvr (including the A B and C hard buttons?)

thanks in advance,
John

Most do now. All DVR boxes in Phoenix metro (Cox Cable) now offer an option to power your box on by pressing a number. You now have an anchor. That's all you need.

Once you've selected "power and numeric" in the setup menu, you can now turn on the box by using the macro "0" and "exit" ("exit" keeps you on the last or current channel you are watching).

All DVR's shut down every night now (here). You do not have to shut them down.

Or make a Power Off macro by doing the macro "0" and "exit", then a "Power Toggle".

That's what I use, works perfectly.

So here's a dumb question.

Why do I want to turn off my box if it gets shut off by the cable company each night anyway?

I don't know. Mine doesn't shut off automatically.

Also, I think the hard drive spins down when off, so it may extend its life a little.

I think it's a matter of time before all Cable DVR's will be issued the "sleep" command from the main office.

It doesn't cost us a dime to leave the DVR on 24/7, but the cable company knows it will be replacing buckets of them prematurely with out this software upgrade.

I imagine DirecTV/Dish could care less since it's your dime.

My 8300HD (from my local cable company) does not respond to this. Too bad.... SJ

Keep checking your cable box for this update. I'm sure it will come in time (the software upgrade is downloaded thru the cable line itself).

The MX-650 and MX-850 are great remotes for this model. URC has been good with getting all of the commands for Scientific Atlanta boxes. I have several of those boxes myself and my remotes have opreated them perfectly.

If you are looking to buy a remote and would like a free consultation, I would be happy to help you. Feel free to call me at: (914) 509-5360 between 10 AM and 9 PM EST. I am always happy to help.

Thank you,
Damon DG
