I chose the MX 850 for two reasons: 1. It has the most Tivo-like hard button layout. 2. It has downloadable (current) IR code sets.
Unfortunately, I was wrong on item 2. The editor contains six Philips Tivo code sets, and they're either incomplete, or are full of codes that just don't work with my Philips 240-series 80 hour unit. It looks like I may as well give up on the preprogrammed IR codes and just learn everything for the Tivo at least. Is this going to be the same for all my other gear, present and future?

I believe the Tivo has different code sets (or unit ID's) that can be set using the Tivo's on screen guide. I have mostly ReplayTV experience, but haven't met a Tivo yet that I couldn't control...I would check that first.
However, i too have found codes in the database that either don't work or just don't work reliably enough and have ended up learning the codes ultimately just to be sure. At least the 850 makes learning quicker by using the 'next button' feature.
