I've installed the IRCLONE drivers on 4 different Windows XP computers at work and did not have any difficulties. The drivers and the Backup Utility worked fine in each case.

When you first plug the IRCLONE into a windows XP computer, Windows XP will find and install a driver for "USB High Speed Serial Converter" which will be listed under USB devices. This is the driver mentioned by Davepar above.

It then tries to install another driver for the USB COM Port which it cannot find a driver for. Since the "High Speed Serial Converter" is installed automatically and silently, the only driver that windows asks you for is the Com Port which it cannot find.
You cannot try to install the D2XX driver here since it's trying to install a virtual com port. The D2XX driver won't work for this device. Just cancel or finish without installing a driver for the com port.

Unfortunately, the MX-500 Backup Utility won't recognize the driver WinXP installed so you'll need to update the driver to the FTDI FT8U2XX Device.

When you update the driver the Com port disappears.

I can post more detailed instructions later for installing the driver if anyone has any trouble getting the driver to work under WinXP.

EDIT: I set up a quick web page with pictures that describes how I installed the WinXP drivers.
EDIT: The page has been moved to the IRClone web site.

The pictures may take a little while to load if you're on a dial-up connection.

Hutchca,

Very nice call. I tried that with my XP Home edition and it worked as advertised. Uploads and downloads worked just fine. I think there is one difference between what I did and what your site says as follows. When I plugged the IRCLONE-MX in XP popped up the screen for help with loading the drivers for the USB Serial Port. Previously I had gone through the procedure but this time I just cancelled like you said in your post. That way when I looked at the Device Manager I saw your first window with the yellow question mark against the "Other devices" and "USB Serial Port".

Thanks. I guess if XP owners are prepared to fiddle a little they can hook up a IRCLONE-MX. Much appreciate it.

Mike

Hutchca, you da man!

Works great on my PC running XP Home, Service Pack 1. Now I don't have to hook up my old Win 98 computer. :-)

Thanks to Mike C and Dave as well for their execution of a great idea.

Thanks for the detailed how-to on installing XP drivers for IRCLONE-MX Hutcha. I was wary after my annoying experience with the RCA Kazoo mp3 player and its non-existent XP drivers. Seeing that others have posted success, I took the plunge and ordered today! Now, if we can just get the editor software out the door . . .

I received the clone and then downloaded the backup utility but I had a problem and I sent an email to IRClone telling them of my dilemma and asked for suggestions, now this is Saturday and I did not expect a reply until Monday but they responded within minutes, and my problem which was mine and not theirs is now history.

It's great to be dealing with a company that is there for their customers.

Thank you-Dave Ridenour

I received my IRClone promptly after ordering. It worked perfectly from the start with no installation problems (Windows 2000). I am pleased to have backups of both of my MX500's. I tested them both by reversing the programming on each. They both worked as they should after restore. Thanks, Mike, for a great product.

Has any new owner of an IRCLONE-MX got a PC with the B version of Windows 95? If so I would be grateful if they would try out the IRCLONE-MX and BU software on it to see if it works. Thanks.

Hi Mike,

AFAIK, W95 doesn't support USB.

Jim:

Win95B, otherwise known as Win95 OEM Service 2, does indeed support USB - but not very well. There are significant reliability problems with it - I've found devices which work perfectly on Win98 or later just don't work at all on Win95. Because of its USB issues, most USB devices don't bother to support it - most set Win98 as the minimum.

Just got my Ir-clone and within a few minutes I had my remote backed up and then restored. The backup software was really good in giving you step by step operations. Mike and Dave have done a great job. Also thanks to Hutchca who came to the rescue when I posted the xp problem which was listed on the irclone site. His directions worked like a charm.

Can't wait for the editor software when all the fun begins.

Dave
