SHOULD YOU RESET THE REMOTE BEFORE YOU DOWNLOAD A NEW OPERATING PROGRAM. I HAVE NOT BEEN DOING THAT BUT THINGS SEEM TO WORK OKAY.

No, downloading basically does the same thing.

That's why a failed download often results in no program on the remote. :-)
