I've had past experience using the MX-500 remote. I found it to be well designed and functional. I'm looking into picking up a used MX-850. I want to have the capability to program/backup via PC.

First, I understand the 850 is both RF and IR compatible. I have an integrated Xantech IR system. Will the 850 function well with it without the use of a base station?

I've read that the buttons on the 850 don't feel as responsive as those on the MX-500. I'm not entirely sure about the validity of that statement.

Anyway - any opinions on the reliability of the MX-850?

Thanks.

I wouldn't trust any of the mx-850's on ebay. Because of buttons no longer working. I would go with mx-700's, with its gemstone keys.

I am curious why you say this about the keys. Do the gemstone keys work differently under the cover? I certainly agree that used MX850s carry risk. Many sold on Ebay are essentially worn out.

I gather the Xantech IR system is a remote repeater. It should work fine. Also, do you have access to the Editor Program that you will need?

I am a retired salesman who learned to do basic programming. I love the MX850/800 and still use it after all these years. It is so easy to find the buttons in the dark, it feels right in the hand for me. As we record rather than channel surf I use the previous channel button for the skip task.

I also use Eneloop rechargable batteries so battery life is not an issue. I always have a backup set ready to go.
