I just bought an MX-900 per recommendations from this site and others. My past two remotes, a Harmony 880 and an MX-850, were broken by the little people that run crazily around my house (my kids). It's not so bad....I get to try out new remotes without too many complaints from my wife.

I have sucessfully programmed my last two remotes -- a Harmony 880 and an MX-850 -- so I was naturally confident when upgrading to the MX-900. But after spending many hours programming the MX-900 with no good results, my confidence has shrunk like a penis in cold water.

I figure I have 3 options:
1) Go back to using the two hundred remotes I have
2) Run over the MX-900 with my car and (somehow) blame it on the kids (so my wife won't complain about me buying another electronic gizmo)
3) Join a blog site and try to figure this whole programming thing out -- BINGO!

Here's what I've got in my system:
BenQ PB6200 - Projector
Oppo 971HD - DVD Player
Harman Kardon AVR 430 - Receiver
Samsung SIR-T451 - HDTV Tuner
Panasonic PV-V4620 - VCR
Omnifi DMS1 - a wireless digital media streamer
Xbox - doesn't use a remote

I'm trying to do activity based programming and would like use as many discrete on/off as possible. Are there discretes for the above components? The MX-900 editor's IR database provides them for only the Harman AVR 430.

Using discretes is the only way I can think of to program the remote for activity switching (i.e. while watching TV, I want to switch to watching a DVD without turning the projector off.) Is there another way with the MX-900?

Any help you provide will grow my confidence....I won't use the same sybolism as before...that'll get wierd.

I may end up going with option 4: hire it done (I'm really close to that). Are there "remote" remote programmers (programming from a distance - I send the specs, someone sends me a file to download and viola!)?

The MX-900 is very similar to the MX-850.

Did you have discretes for the devices with the 850?

Because then they will exist with the 900.

If you've live updated and they're still not there, check the files sections of this site. You can import CCF's and Hex.

I know offhand that Oppo DVD players usually have discretes.

I apologize for the mistake, I had the Omega, the MX-650. I programmed it on the remote itself (no computers). I did not use discrete codes for it, which made for a problem especially when transitioning from one activity to another. Those transition troubles are something I wanted to avoid when buying the computer-programmable MX-900.

After a bit of research, I found the hex codes for the Oppo, but I'm unsure how to get those into the remote. I haven't found anywhere in the MX-900 editor that allows me to import hex codes.

Once I get the Oppo figured out, I'll research to find the other discretes out there.

There are a bunch oppo discrete on/off codes in the URC database. Have you tried using any of those?

Take a look inside the the other Oppo DVD devices. There are only 4 or 5 of them.

As for the hex codes above, I just found this from Universal Remote's website under the FAQs for the MX-900:

9) IS IT POSSIBLE TO ENTER HEX OR BINARY IR CODE DATA INTO THE MX EDITOR?
The MX editor does not support direct entry of Hex or Binary code data.

Doh!

While I have used Remote Central's site in the past to read reviews on remotes, I'm fairly new to the blogs and databases. I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking for.

The info on URC's site is old.

If you open the universal browser in the MX-900 editor, there is a key for inputting hex.

If you have an older editor version, you can still indirectly enter the codes after making a CCF in ProntoEdit, but you don't need to worry about that if your editor is up to date.

As mentioned before, have you tried locating discretes under generic codeset names (example [OPPO 1])? You then have to test and see if they work for your device.

Thanks guys for all your help. I decided to let the pros deal with it. I have too many devices that don't have discretes, which seems to complicate programming. I want it done right and I'm not getting the results I want.

So I'm going with option 4: hire it done.

Thanks!

For all you Vista users, one last thing I learned about the MX-900 editor:

If your Live Update doesn't work you need to run the program as an administrator. Right click on the MX-900 editor icon and select "run as administrator".

Maybe that'll save someone some time in the future.
