I need to replace my non-backlight MX-700 with another remote. I use the following features on the MX-700, so the new one must have them too.

5 Activities, with macros for each activity button beside the LCD screen.
Goto page short cuts.

Squeezebox x2 (with seperate amp volume punch throughs)
DVD player, Oppo 981
Lexicon MC-1
Samsung M87
Audiolab 8000Q
Dimmer

I noticed the MX-850 is basically the same, but with RF features. But I don't use two pages of devices, so would another cheaper model suit me better? I've used a MX-500 and it would be ideal if it had the macro function of the MX-700, granted it'll take longer to setup but since I have MX-700 with discrete IR codes the saving would be worth it the built-in database isn't that important anymore, although MX Editor makes it far quicker to programme.

Also have URC improved the backlight? The MX-500 backlight LCD is far brighter than my 700 (on the 700 the text is lit, on the 500 it's the reverse)
Shut it Dole scum! :-)

The MX850 is an all new backlighting, PC programmable and RF capable if you need it later

The MX500 is a step back and discontinued. I would go with a MX850 or MX900 remote

I concur!

If you really like the button layout on your 700, go with the 850. If you like the button arrangement of the 900 better, it's a great remote, but will cost you more.

If you like the 850, you'll be able to load in your configuration very easily and carry on your way with a better overall remote than your 700, including RF if you ever need it, and the great backlighting.

The MX-850 Editor's Universal Browser also allows the input of Pronto Hex Codes in a drag and drop format, comes in handy and I use it quite often.....as GregoriusM stated, you will be able to open your MX-700 .mxf file with the 850's editor and be up and running in less time than you can open and drink a bottle of Corona :)

Go 900. Faster Programing and downloads. Ctrl C/V action. Dont have to purchase a usb to serial connection and then wait 5min for it to zip to the remote.

The true Press and Hold macros and the addition of variables in a near term release make the MX-900 far better than the 850 imho.
