MX-800 Arrow Buttons Don't Work With Playstation 3

I have been lurking here for a while but this is my first post. I followed the instructions in this article on Remote Central to use my MX-800 with a Playstation 3.

[Link: remotecentral.com]

My old Playstation 2 remote runs the PS3 as described in the article. I found that the MX-800 database contains codes for this remote under AUX/Sony. I have everything working fine except that the arrow buttons (up, down, left, right) on the MX-800 do not work. The PS3 does not respond to them. The arrow buttons on the PS2 remote work fine although they are a little touchy, more than a quick tap results in really fast movement of the current selection on the screen.

I tried learning the codes from the PS2 remote but that doesn't work either. The MX-800 indicates that it learned the code, but the PS3 still does not respond to the arrow buttons on the MX-800. I tried all the tricks in the MX-800 manual (holding, tapping, fluttering, semaphore). In each case the MX-800 learns the code but the PS3 does not respond. I also tried teaching the PS2 arrow button codes to other buttons on the MX-800 but it made no difference.

I searched this forum and found a thread from 2003 about this exact problem with a MX-500 and PS2 but no resolution was ever posted. Any suggestions? Has anyone had success using the arrow buttons of any URC remote with the PS3?

I too use my PS2 remote to control my PS3 and have the same problem.

I use a MX3000 and MRF250.

Ok, thanks for the reply. Maybe the URC remotes cannot duplicate what the PS2 remote arrow buttons send to the IR adapter. If anyone gets this to work please post which model of remote you have and how you did it. I may try some more this weekend but am running out of ideas for things to try.

I did some more searching on this forum and found the following thread in the Harmony forum which reports the same problem with the arrow buttons on a Harmony 880.

So it seems this problem is not unique to the URC remotes. The arrow buttons on the PS2 remote must be doing something unusual that prevents duplicating them with a universal remote.

A little late getting to this, but I was able to learn the arrow commands to an MX-950 by using the standalone learning method (also available with the MX-800 and 850). It took a few tries, but you need to learn them by just doing a quick push of the button on the PS2 remote. Don't hold it down.

Thanks for the reply. I tried standalone learning and doing a quick button push but had no success. But since it worked for you I will give it a few more tries, maybe I just didn't get the timing right.

If that doesn't work, is there any way that you could make the learned codes that work for you available as a file that others could try?

Here's an MX-950 .mxa file you can download and use with the Universal Browser:

PS3.mxa

Thanks very much for posting the file. I tried adding the arrow buttons from the PS3 portion of your file to my MX-800 using the universal browser. For some reason only the left button worked, the other 3 still had no response.

But your reply inspired me to try learning them again using standalone mode. After several attempts with tapping the arrow buttons on the PS2 remote I still had no success. So I tried the "semaphore" technique described in the manual again. After a few attempts I was able to learn the PS2 arrow buttons using this technique.

For people who don't have the manual, here is a description of the semaphore technique. You put something which is not transparent between the two remotes to block the signal (I used a DVD case). You set the URC remote to learn the desired button, press and hold the button on the PS2 remote, then remove and replace the blockage. Replacing it very quickly seemed to work best for me.

Thanks to everyone who replied. I can finally watch a movie on my PS3 using only my MX-800. Getting the arrow buttons to work makes a big difference because the IR workaround supports a limited number of features on the PS3. But with the arrow buttons working I can open the on screen options menu (triangle button) which provides access to all the functions provided on the official PS3 Bluetooth remote.

Glad you got it to work. At least you can get the main controls necessary for playback with this workaround (and the menu access if you need something else). If there were also discrete On and Off commands available, I'd be really happy with it. ;-)

John,
I've tried now for hours trying to get my Left button to learn using all the methods listed on this thread (even the semaphore method). Is it possible for you to send me your IR codes?

Thanks,
Linda
