I teach furniture design and also design and build my own furniture. I've created a nice coffee table design that serves very well in front of a sofa for anyone who has trouble finding the tops of their tables (too much clutter). Four legs penetrate a solid wood shelf that is slightly bigger than the glass top. The glass top is 2.5" above the shelf, resting on friction pads atop the legs. It is 3/8" tempered glass with an ogee edge. The table is 15" x 47" overall... long enough for everyone sitting on a long sofa to reach, but narrow enough to not take up too much living room space. The shelf is an ideal place for TV-guides, remotes, the current book you're reading, cards, etc.. The glass top is easy to clean, and gives you a nice view of what is underneath. Since the top is 1" smaller than the shelf in both dimmensions you don't tend to bump the glass. The wood shelf has an ogee edge with a bottom quarter-round.

I've made 6 of these tables. Two were gifts for parents and inlaws. One I'm using and loving. The other three are for sale. They vary slightly. One has a simple, contemporary style leg. One has a more classic profile leg. These are both solid red oak, and can be stained to match your other furniture. The third is a more exotic design with zebra wood shelf and legs. The legs are shaped to look like a real zebra's hind legs. If I had to classify it I'd call it "african" style.

If you are interested in any one of these tables I can email you a picture, and we can discuss price. I can ship these anywhere, but shipping cost will vary depending on where you are.
