Hi!

It's been two months now, and I'm still undecided... I've been looking into other wireless keyboard/mouse combos as well, but not found anything that blows me away. What I really like is touchscreen (I've just bought a great mobile phone which is all touchscreen as well, Nokia 7710, and I'm terribly happy with that).

Meanwhile MS has released a wireless keyboard/mouse combo, the MCE Remote Keyboard, which replaces all three, which was my original intention. However, the mouse part is horrible according to all users. And as I say, I'd like touch screen.

Interesting thing though, as far as I understand it, it is actually an IR keyboard/mouse, not RF. So in theory it should be possible to learn the iPronto to do at least the keyboard stuff as well? (I'm having difficulties envisioning how the mouse would be implemented though, contemplating perhaps four buttons; up/right/down/left)

Any ideas? Anyone know of any touch screen product that can work as a keyboard and mouse as well as remote?

Brgds

Danny

I have a total of about 5 Philps remotes starting with the original pronto and ending with the iPronto. I am the barry gordon that wrote the original monograph on Pronto hex codes way back when.

How good is an iPronto? Well depends on your expectations. I wanted a large screen touchpad remote to control my HT that I could program and expand as time went on and my system changed. I did not want an EPG, I did not want a browser, I did not want a microphone or the playing of music or the viewing of video. I wanted IR and or RF transmission.

The iProinto has met all my expectations. Its overall performance in my restricted environment is adequate, but not what I would call exceptional. All of its shortcomings have been discussed.

I wish:
The Wi-Fi capability was open and documented so one could send TCP/IP or UDP instead of IR/RF for button presses. I wish the RF was receivable by lets say a simple RF receiver on a PC com port or USB like the ATI remote or others.

I will say nothing about Philips, other then they are the poorest company I know of with regard to customer relations. I will never buy another Philips product based solely on how they chose to support the iPronto and their original marketing hype.

How can you avoid the Ipronto to connect every night to EPG ?

It's my problem, because I am not interested with EPG and my Wi-Fi is nightly disconnected

Thanks :)

Barry, if one reads through the posts everywhere on Remote Central, it sounds like poor support is the norm - at least at the end user level. Most of the higher end products are sold only through installers who provide the customer support, isolating the4 mfgr from the ultimate user. Does ANY remote supplier provide good support for the user?

I am a fairly new user to the prontos..I have recently had a RU980 (tsu7000) for 3 months and it failed on a firmware upgrade...this was the first time I looked at this site for help.
I contacted philips by mail and did not get to far, managed to get them on phone gave them all the details on how it had completely failed, they said they would send me details of how to repair it in next few days....
3 days later I recieved a parcel with a brand new pronto! and just had to send faulty one back at their cost.
My point is that If I had not read any comments on this site I would be none the wiser, disapointed it failed but pleased with a quick replacement.
I have now purchased an ipronto..so now i have both.prob ebay one?. overall the RU980 is easier to use as a tv remote - you just have to get used to holding it,but not as flashy as ipronto and does not have the extra functions which i think are cool, basic web etc both are equally good with x10 etc.

hope this helps

No.....return the old one to Philips.

Even though I do not agree with the way they have treated me, you have had good service and you should honour their request.

I think (hope) you misunderstood him. I think (hope) he meant that he has a working iPronto AND his old RU980, and that he has already sent back the faulty iPronto!

Well, I hope that's what he meant. Otherwise, I'm with you!
