I have setup many Marantz RC5000 and RC9200's using Marantz Touch Screen Setup and am wondering how much resemblance there is to that software and iProntoEdit. Am I on a huge learning curve here or are they similar.

I could download the software and check it out but thought a quick post to someone who has programmed in both would be the best way to find out.

They're actually very similar - if you can program an RC5000 then you can program an iPronto. Almost no learning curve involved.

(This typed just after I got off a call with a customer complaining that the RU950 should never have been launched because it is impossible for an average person to program since he - and he made clear that he was an IT professional and so was of above average intelligence - cannot make head nor tail of the ProntoEditNG software which is apparently so unstable, so unfriendly and so riddled with bugs that he is sure that he has an early development release of the software from Philips. :-D )

Thanks for the quick reply! Glad to hear they're similar so I'm looking forward to jumping into the iPronto.

There was a large learning curve on my first go around but once I "got it" it was very easy to develop in. After working with it for over a couple years my wish list of the way the software should work was quite long but it's that way with ANY development language.

An average intelligence guy like me didn't have a problem!

Just downlaoded the software and it looks great.

However, is there an Emulator like there is in the Touch Screen Edit? It worked great for testing your CCF before sending to the remote.

No, unfortunately there is no Emulator, you have to test it out on the actual unit. Kind of makes it tough when programming these for others.

I wouldn't think an emulator would be released. You could create a small pc with the emulator in place of the ipronto, or worse for phillips the emulator could be run on pda.

That was the reasoning that was put foward to me some time ago however an emulator wouldn't necessarily have ay sort of IR output enabled (or even possible) so it's a bit of an invalid argument as far as I see.

However - having said that I do find the emulators of limited value anyway - the ones for the RU890 / RU940 / RU950 / RU970 in particular run at a completely different speed to the actual remote itself so you cannot see whether any page transitions or animations that you create will run correctly and obviously the "display" doesn't accurately reflect the quality of the display on the actual unit (hence you can't tell whether your graphics will be recogniseable).

Basically I find that you need to test out your configs on the actual remote itself anyway.

yes, but they are useful for over all feel while programming, calls (how do you do....) and pics

I found it extremely helpful as buggy as it was (locking up sometimes) while programming the remote off-site so I will miss it. Also came in very handy for IR code testing while debugging on-site.

Yeah - I guess I don't do much on-site programming so maybe that's why I find an emulator of less use.
