This is a newbie problem, I'm sure. I just set up my new iPronto. It is set to DHCP and is correctly getting an IP address and DNS addresses, but the browser can't see the internet - even giving it a numeric IP address. My Sharp Zaurus with wireless card and the same DHCP/no proxy setting loads web pages just fine. Internet connection is a Covad DSL line. I am sitting right next to the AP, so signal strength is fine. Any suggestion on what to try next?

some additional data - iProntoedit does not see the iPronto, even though they are on the same segment. Also the PC cannot ping the iPronto (although I do not know if the iPronto ever responds to pings)

Hi,
Try using fixed IP, I found that worked for me. (Until mine stopped working!)

I found that iprontoedit would not list the "name" of my machine in the window, i had to type in the IP address and then connect. I used 192.168.0.10

which firmware are you using ?

As Andrew hints at, older firmware has a problem with DHCP. The first thing you should do is make sure you have the latest.

Thanks guys. The system is running version 1.3.7 - unfortunately, I can't even look for an upgrade until I establish Internet connectivity :-( I just tried typing in the IP address to iProntoEdit (in my case 192.168.1.104), but the PC does not see it. I also switched to the radio button "Fixed IP", which doesn't clear any of the addresses (did you think it was necessary to clear them all and type them in again?), no change. It will not even bring up the html page of the linksys wireless router. It is like nothing works after the DHCP handshake.

OK if this does not work or hangs dont blame me !

When I first got my machine the first thing I wanted to do was upgrade the firmware.

I could not connect to my WAP or do anything with the web browser. I (think) I changed the settings to fixed IP, address as above and in the "about" screen pushed the upgrade firmware button. At that time I did not appear to have an internet connection.

Make sure the power is connected, and close to your wap and make sure your wap is connected to the internet. I use a proxy but you fortunate people with broadband wont need that ?

Mine took a couple of reeboots but finally connected and upgraded the firmware. It took a LONG time for me, about 1 and 1/2 hours, and goes through 6 sectors (ish?) and is a bit scary.

I gather there is a new version out next week so you may or may not want to wait till then.

just a PS..

I think its mad that philips have implemented an upgrade system that depends on your wireless network to upgrade or change your settings.

If something goes wrong with your network connection for any reason you are stuffed. There is a USB connection on the machine, why not use it for iprontoedit for example?

Also it seems that you cannot totally reset your machine to go back to "factory settings"....

Andrew,
Thanks - a good suggestion, but I get as far as "could not lookup the host boot.pronto.philips.com". Which I think means that it can not establish a network connection to the DNS server. I tried my primary and secondary servers as well as the default gateway (hoping it would relay). No luck.

Update – I took the iPronto to a friend’s house with a Dell WAP/cable modem. The iPronto in DHCP mode came right up talking to the network. I upgraded the software to the current 1.5.10, activated EPG, etc.

Brought it home and it still doesn’t work talking to the Linksys WAP/Router box. Still gets the right DHCP info, but then can not talk to anything else. Can anyone think of any other variables before I have to go buy a different WAP/Router?

I thought I saw someone else here with a linksys with problems.

I have a Netgear MR814v2 which (was !) is OK.

My suggestion... take the ipronto to your best buy / compusa and try before you buy

OK, I found an inexpensive solution. I have an SMC WAP - just the AP, no router, no NAT, no switch. I plugged it in to one of the switch ports on the Linksys box, creating a 2nd wireless system in the same area (different SSID, of course). Now the iPronto is happily using the 2nd network, but everything is still on the same segment. I think that Philips may have to fess up to being incompatible with Linksys.

That's funny - I have been using an Ipronto on LinkSsy for 10 months with no problems.

I use a Linksys wireless AP with no problems... and for quite a while, there was a Linksys router as well (separate units, not combined). Recently I changed the router to a 3com and it continues to work fine.

I'd suggest, if at all possible, buying Routers with the Wi/Fi label on it. These usually offer a greater compatibiliy range.
