I have just bought an iPronto to control my Home Theater PC over my network. I need a remote dektop application running on the HTPC to operate ShowShifter and other applications. I have tried both UltraVNC and RealVNC.

Both work correctly with a laptop on the same network, but when I connect with the iPronto browser, the correct login page is displayed but the virtual keyboard does not appear when I touch the password box. Since I cannot enter a password, I cannot access the HTPC. Neither version of VNC can be set up witout a password as this is seen as a security risk.

Has anyone got VNC or any other remote desktop application to work? I have also tried the terminal server that comes with Windows XP Professional but I cannot get the iPronto to even logon to the starting page.

Try the web client for terminal services. You need to load Terminal Services Advanced Client. I havn't tried it yet but... Let me know if it works!

This is the response from the iPront support team to my report of the problem with VNC.

"We have investigated this issue, and the thing is that input fields implemented by Java applets are not supported by the iPronto software. Also this functionality of the software will not become supported within the near future.

Forcing the keyboard to display is also not possible, as the iPronto software is not registering any input fields, there would be no field to direct the input
to.

So sadly for the time being you will have to use other methods of input than the Java applets."

My real question is why Philips do not see this as an urgent problem. If VNC could be made to work on the iPronto, it would immediately open up a wide range of additional third party home media applications - fulfilling much of the promise of the system. Is this a technical or marketing issue? Do we have to wait for Philps to release their own specific web based media aplications with iPronto clients?

Update to firmware 1.6.22 and you'll see that VNC now works.

iPronto's keyboard doesn't work in you Windows applications, but you can use Windows' On-Screen Keyboard (goto Start, Programs, Accessories, Accessibility).

You're in for a lot of scrolling ;-)

Hello,

I downloaded tight vnc from www.tightvnc.com and that one works with the iPronto.

Michel.
