This is a warning to all prospective iPronto buyers.

Don't buy it! You'll regret it.

I just received my second unit, a replacement for the first unit that was shipped to me defective. After my discussions with Philips technical support (and what a waste they are) I decided to have the dealer ship me a replacement for the defective unit.

I received it today and what do you know....

It's defective.

This time it's the screen. Only two thirds of the screen displays information correctly. The other third has white lines through it.

Now this is some poor quality stuff. I can't imagine any manufaturer consistantly producing poor quality, untested electronic equipment. But Philips does.

So if you want to blow your money on a product that has constant issues, and read this forum, this product has issues, then buy an iPronto.

I'm going to find another way to spend my dollars, like on an HTPC with all the bells and whistles. And for the price of this and the NTX6400, you can.

FYI: This is the first message that I posted.

Interresting prospect. I actually read this forum BEFORE I bought mine and I do regret purchasing it.
I've only had it one day and the display stopped working. The hard buttons work though. I have tried hard rebooting it but the display still doesn't work.

Philips wants me to send it back to them so they can keep it for a couple of weeks. guess I got to use it for a couple of hours my first night though I probably won't see it for the next month.

This type of crap really sucks. A manufacturer (Philips) that sells an expensive piece of equipment that on occaision works for the lucky ones.

FYI: This is the second message that I posted.

So here's an update. The dealer allowed me to return it though I wanted another one instead of my money back. On the way to UPS I connected the battery and it worked. It seems the board had to discharge and it took all night. (But don't think my problems are over.)I didn't ship it but instead I spent some time programming it this afternoon. On the way to the gym the iPronto went to sleep. (5 mins) 90 minutes later.. after my workout I tried to awake my sleeping iPronto but the little beauty will not wake up. Even though I may resemble a frog... and yes I played the prince in sleeping beauty when I was in elementary school, my kiss didn't work.

I'm a geek so I can't just let this thing go without figuring out why.... (I really wish this wasn't one of my traits but its earned me lots of money.)

So after another hour of testing I've come to the conclusion that there is an issue with the motherboard. Possibly a hair line crack or cold solder joint. The battery when conneccted doesn't always make the system start and it should.

Again, for those of you that want something that works near flawlessly, this is not your solution. Go simple, tried and true. You may not get the bells and whistles but you'll spend less time mucking about with stuff that you really don't want to know about.

I on the other hand believe that there IS a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow so I'm gonna keep at it until it's right.

And I AM gonna ship it out tomorrow to my dealer for another one.

Hello,
I can't agree to this. I'm from Germany and bougt my iPronto from UK. I started my "Pronto Experience" with the old Pronto, than with the Prono Pro. The Pronto I sold to a friend, the Pronto Pro is still in use (by my wife, because she's not familiar with the iPronto.). I'm very happy with the iPronto except with the reboot times (look to the thread covering all information about that). The iPronto is expensive, but I won't miss it inside my living room...

Best regards to all of you,

Olaf

It IS technically possible for the iPronto to mix remote & browser screens, but for some reason they haven't activated it yet. :-(

I've just bought one (in the UK) today and hope I have better experiences than those above. If not I will be getting a refund from my dealer. I hope it doesn't come to that but having just spent £13k with them I trust they wouldn't argue.

However. already having problems as it will not accept the DHCP setting and jkeeps reverting to the old domain name and IP address they had set in the shop (some 200 miles away so no way it is still picking up their WAP :) )

I received an email from Philips today and thought I'd share the email and my response. (hammer)

To whom it may concern:

The iPronto is the biggest piece of crap on the face of the earth.
This email that you have sent me is indicative of the type of technical support that Philips provided with the iPronto. Your testing and quality assurance is pathetic at best and this hilarious display of trying to fool your patrons into believing that their opinion is worth something is as big a lie as the product you peddle.

Subject: Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in an iPronto beta test.

Dear iPronto user,

Congratulations! You have been selected to participate in an iPronto beta test.

Since the launch of the iPronto, Philips has received a lot of valuable feedback
from extensive users of the iPronto such as you. Most of this feedback came
down to issues that prevent users to make optimal use of their iPronto. Therefore,
Philips has selected you to participate in a beta test of new iPronto software.

This beta test will last until the end of February (approx. 3 weeks), and will require
you to report regularly on your test experiences, by means of a web based tool. Before
being able to start the test, you will be required to read and sign a Beta Test Agreement.

To be eligible to participate into the test, you are required to own an iPronto.
Please be aware that during the period of testing, your iPronto system software
will be updated to a beta version.

If you would like to join this beta test, please reply to this email with the subject
"applicant for iPronto beta test". Applying to become an iPronto beta tester will
be possible until Wed Feb 10, 12 PM.

Thank you in advance for your support!

The Philips Prontoteam

Thannks for the suggestion Ted. I dumped it long ago. I'm just extracting my pound of flesh as I have purchased my right in shipping charges and aggrivation.

Oh yeah... thanks for keeping the thread alive and on top for other prospective iPronto customers to read!
