I just bought used Logitech Harmony 650 remote for my HTPC + TV + AMP for 45 Euros. However, I just noticed that some Android phones can be used as an Universal Remote.

For example if I buy used HTC One with built in IR blaster for 50 Euros and install this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.moletag.htcone.remote

It seems to be much more powerful then Harmony remote with good screen, IR control, control over IP for devices supporting network control like my AMP and HTPC etc.
the only downside I see is battery life on the phone.

So, do you have any experience of using dedicated Android phone vs Harmony as an universal remote?

A remote is always more easy to use !

if you quick want to put the volume up, press one button.
With android: unlock screen, start app, find button, press.....

I have the moletag app on my Android as well as a Harmony 700. The app is quite good but not a replacement for a well programmed Harmony. You will find that the Harmony is much easier to customize with the Logitech software and their library of commands is second to none.

My opinion: If you have an Android, get the app as it is worth the small price but don't expect it to replace the Harmony. The dedicated remote is just better.
