So I finally got my 1000 yesterday to replace my 880, power it up right away and it goes to the "choose a language" screen. I choose English and hit OK but it goes right back to "choose a language" screen and I cannot get it of there. Am I being hasty or is it not right?

Did you charge the battery before starting to program it?

I did not and I read a manual this morning that said the first thing to do is charge it for 8 hours. Do you think that is it?

Could be or you have a bad remote. The 1000 has had many problems over the years, many of which were never corrected. In my opinion, you would be better off with the 1100 which replaced the 1000, it has not had been problematic like the 1000. The 1000 came out in April of 2008.
