Hi ALL,

I just upgraded from an 880 to a One and I am quite pleased with it. I was able to use the "upgrade remote" option and other than not bringing over the soft buttons (which is a known limitation) the conversion went without a hitch.

I'm now working on the soft buttons and I was wondering if any special characters could be added to the labels. For instance the hard buttons that control a cursor are for the main device in an activity: DVR in Watch DVR. But there are times you may need to access the TV menu so I have set up the TV's cursor controls on one page of the soft buttons and the labels are TV UP, TV LEFT, etc. I then decided I wanted something like TV> and TV< but up and down are not that good using "v" and shift 6 (^) for down and up, resp. So is it possible to insert special characters in the labels such as an arrow, and if so how would you do it?

THanks,
Gerry

If you're using Windows, click the Start menu and choose RUN. Run the program "charmap" (without quotes). Then you can see all sorts of characters which you can then select, copy and paste into the Harmony software (I don't have a list of working ones). Many should display properly but not all will. If you have any problems updating then it could be due to the special character you inserted so remove it and try again.

Hi Xpat,

Thanks for the info! I'm familiar with Ch Map and already went into it but would the Harmony software be able to mix fonts. By that I mean if I look into the Arial font there are no characters with arrows. But the Wingdings font has a bunch of them. Do you think a Wingding character could be inserted into a label?

Thanks,
Gerry

Hi Gerry,

I'm sure you could insert a character from the wingding font, but unless the Harmony has this font face available I doubt it would render properly. It looks like the font used on the Harmony is Arial or similar so you're probably limited to whatever is available in that font face. However, the only way to find out is to try it out! The worst that would likely happen is the remote update will fail or you'll see some squares or other strange characters on your remote LCD (which could be easily resolved by removing the offending characters).

Good luck =)

For TV Up/Down, you could use +/-. I know it accepts + - and . (dot).

I've also successfully used some other miscellaneous characters like an arrow or degree sign but I never kept tabs on what worked or what didn't.

Same here. I also remember that you have more flexibility in the label names, but NOT so with the command names. The command names will tolerate + - and . (dot).

Hi ALL,

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess for now I'll just use +, -, <, > and others!!

Another question! When I first converted from my 880 to the One, in one of the activities there were some default soft buttons I believe A, B, etc. But instead of labels there were icons that looked kind of nice. I got rid of them so I could set up want I wanted but I was wondering how do you get them back. I think I read somewhere that there is some limited capabilities for the One to have icons instead of labels and I was wondering how to get to that.

Thanks,
Gerry

When you're setting up buttons, label them A, B, C, etc and you should be able to get the coloured icons.

IIRC I've used these or similar characters in the past with success (in the command labels not actual command names, as mentioned by jlet).

Hi xpat,

Is it just A, B, etc?

I have set up those labels for my Blu Ray player but in the Harmony software I don't see anything other than the text labels. I haven't had a chance to update the remote so I don't know the fancy buttons will actually show up in the remote but in the Harmony software I don't see anything!

Thanks,
Gerry

i've checked with harmony on this very issue. at this time the one does not support the colored buttons for blu-ray players. i do not have a date when they will update the soft/firmware to allow it. i hope they get on it sooner than later.

Right, just like squareeyes says, it won't work on blu-ray ... you'd have to be using those labels on a DVR, STB, satellite or similar activity (devices that commonly make use of the coloured buttons).

Hi squareeyes,

Thanks for the info.

Also, I wanted to thank you for all the icons you created and placed on your web site. I used a whole bunch for my 880 and now that I upgraded to the One, I also used a whole bunch of new icons which are much nicer than the 880 icons.

Thanks again for all of your icons!!!
